DEFINITION OF STATISTICS
Statistics is branch of mathematics
which deals with
collection,organization,analysis,tabul
ation and interpretation of data.

Why study statistics?
1.To conduct research effectively
2.To evaluate journal articles.
3.To develop further the critical thinking.
4.To develop the analytical skill.
5.To be an informed consumer, etc.

Applications of statistical
concepts in the business world
Finance –correlation and regression,
index numbers, time series analysis
Marketing –hypothesis testing, chi-
square tests, nonparametric statistics
Research–hypothesis testing, chi-
square tests, nonparametric tests
Industrial management–Linear
programming problems

Types of statistics
Descriptive statistics –Methods of
organizing, summarizing, and presenting data
in an informative way
Population –The data under statistical study
is called as population
Sample –A small amount of population used
for statistical study

Data
The collection of data that are relevant to the
problem being studied is commonly the most
difficult, expensive, and time-consuming part of
the entire research project.
Statistical data are usually obtained by counting
or measuring items.
Primary data : It is a data collected directly from
the population
It is personally collected by researcher using
questionairs/Interview.
Secondary data have already in government
record, television,newspaper,etc

Data
Statistical data are usually obtained by countingor
measuring items. Most data can be put into the
following categories:
Qualitative-data are measurements that each
fail into one of several categories.(hair color,
ethnic groups and other attributes of the
population)
quantitative-data are observations that are
measured on a numerical scale (distance traveled
to college, number of children in a family, etc.)

Characteristics
The properties which are to be studied for each
individual of the population are called the
characteristics of the population.
There are two types of characteristics.
1.Attribute
2.Variate

Attribute: It is a qualitative characteristics of an
individual of a population.
Examples: Educational qualification, mother
toungue,gender, blood group, etc
Variate: It is a quantitative characteristics of an
individual of a population.
Example: Income, Marks, height, weight, number of
children
