BEE ANATOMY Honey bee body is made up of three major segments – Head Thorax Abdomen Legs Compound eye

Head The head bears eyes , antennae , mandible and functional tiny brain . A] Antennae – On the head of the honey bee form a sensory organs providing a function foe bee sense of touch , taste and even unique form of hearing . Males have 13 segments making each antenna while females have 12 segments .

DIAGRAM

B ] compound eye – Honey bee have two sets of eyes , compound and simple . Large eyes are compound comprises of several eye units . This allows bees to navigate and process information faster and protect eyes from daylight . Three simple eyes allows the bee to see pollen location . C] Mandible are strong jaws – The mouthpart consists of other complicated organs , including tongue that collect nectar .

THORAX It is the base for the legs and the wings A] Thorax features six legs and two pairs of wings . Muscle in thorax allow the bee to control the movement of wings and flight. B] Honey bee has three pairs of legs. Which splits into six segments . It helps the bee in landing on stick surface .

WINGS

ABDOMEN It consist the stinger , wax glands and reproductive organs A] It queens the abdomen failures the spermatheca which store sperms during mating . For the drone , his sexual organ is , “use once ” device B] For workers bees have four pair of wax producing scales exist on the underside of the abdomen. C] stinger- Honey bees sting only as a last resort when threatened and once they use it , they die typically .

LEGS Foragial or C orbiculate [ Pollen collecting ] Pollen basket in their back legs helps to transport pollen from the flowers to the hive .

COMPOUND EYES Compound eye of honey bee having 5000- 30000 eye lens hence vision is wide & sharp .

ORGANIZATION OF A HONEY BEE COLONY Moral , Social insects , live in colonies. No. of bees in a hive varies from 10,000 to 1,00,000. Which includes a queen , up to 500 drones & remaining all workers .

Queen Only one sexually developed female . Reproductive is the only job throughout life . Always guarded by the guard bees . Queen flies out only once in its life cycle to mate . Lays 1000 – 2000 eggs / day and about 15 lakh eggs in life time . Highly nutritious royal jelly [ mandibular gland secretion ] is the regular food for the queen . Queen live up to 4 years . Queen is up to 2 cm in length .

QUEEN BEE

ROYAL JELLY

DRONES / MALES Main function to mate with queen . Up to 500 in number when the new queen is ready for mating . It depends on workers even for the food . After their job is over then worker kills the drones . Life span up to 70 days.

DRONE BEE

Workers [ biologically female ] 4 pairs of wax glands below their abdomen . The division of labor is perfect. Responsible for all work necessary for maintenance of colony . Each workers performs in succession the various labor tasks .
