Genetic Engineering and the uses of GMO Benefit of Genetically Modified organisms
Organisms have different characteristics because of the variety of genes expressed. 1. The technology allows insertion of desired trait to an organisms through the process or Recombinant DNA technology (Genetic engineering). 2. Genetic engineering is the process of adding a foreign DNA to the genome of all genetic material of another organisms. 3. Recombinant DNA technology is the technique of combining two DNA sequences from different ssources.3-Genetically. 4. Modified organisms (GMO) is an organisms or microorganisms whose genetic material has been altered to contain a segment of DNA from another organisms
ADVANCE AND DISADVANTAGES OF GMOS - Genetic engineering has a wide application in medicine and in agriculture.
- Because of Genetic engineering plants become resistance to pests, weeds, and that crops are grown with more nutritional values.
Pest - resistant plants Scientist were able to develop pest -resistant crops by introducing the bacterium , Bacillus thuringiensis (BT) to plats.
- BT produce crystal proteins which are toxic to crop pest such as horn worms
- The gene responsible for the production of the protein in inserted to crops like cotton, eggplant, and tomato.
- These plats began to manufacture BT protein themselve. The proteins are toxic to pests but not to humans.
Herbicide - resistant plans - Using herbicides my have killed the weeds around the plans but it also has an adverse effect to crops.
- Scientist were able to develop the characteristics of plans where they can tolerate the chemicals in the herbicides. Thus , the surrounding weeds are killed and leave the main crop unaffected.
Increase in Nutritional value - Genetic engineering can alter the traits expressed in crops including their nutritional value.
- One notable project is the production of the Golden race which addresse the Nutritional deficiencies associated with Vitamin A which greatly affect countries with citizens under the poverty line.
- Genetic engineers isolated genes ( portion of the DNA ) that encode enzymes from beta - carotene from daffodil flower and added them to the rice . In this way beta - carotene , a precursor to Vitamin A has been synthesized.
Other Benefits of GMOs - it could potentially solve hunger and nutrient deficiencies among children
- Growing crops in different seasons and conditions can be done. Plats that do not grow in warm weather can be modified to fit with the different types of weather.
- More yield of crops can be expected. Since pest and weeds can be removed without affecting the plant , increase of harvest can happen.
Disadvantages of GMOs Consumption - GMO crops increase pesticide use.
- GMO crops have created superweed.
- GMO crops have toxic or allergenic effects on laboratory animals based on studies.
- GMO and Non - GMO crops cannot co- exist.
- GMO is not precise technology that will continue to deliver unpleasant surprises.
The Wolbachia project In Singapore's government laboratories Scientist have bred the bacteria - carrying mosquitoes in rows of pallets where they've separate the male pupae for release in the worst - hit dengue areas.
These in bred mosquitoes aren't like conventional mosquitoes they cannot spread malaria or even dengue. These diseases are premarily spread by female mosquitoes and the Wolbachia project includes all male mosquitoes which are generally Modified.
These mosquitoes , when mate with female mosquitoes ( that aren't Genetically Modified ) don't fertilize the eggs , thus preventing them from hatching. Eventually, the female mosquitoes die ( they can survive only up to 7 days) and the spreading of the disease is gradually reduced.
Points to Remember: - advantages of GMOs include having , pest - resistant and herbicide - resistant plants and plants with increase nutritional value.
- Disadvantages include creation of pesticide use , development of superweed , and presence of allergens.
