My work is based upon the links between three individual snakes and the African
continent as a whole. Links such as pollution, culture and fashion are the main
concepts in which I investigate throughout my works. Using different methods of
textile art such as batik, tie die and lino printing allows me to explore the effects that
colours have on certain surfaces when they are combined together. Outcomes such as
my 1.5 x 1.5 metre batik piece which I named Pollution in colour involves several
other different textile/art media/methods, this allows me to explore the effects
created when combining colours of other types of methods/media.
Throughout my works I investigate and explore what the similarities and links are
between snakes and Africa and how those similarities are related to the fashion
world. Pollution is a key concept that affects both the wildlife and the population
of humans in Africa. For example my 1.5 x 1.5 metre batik piece Pollution in
colour is a big abstract and contemporary piece and is a direct portrayal of countries
such as Mali becoming polluted. I use the African colour scheme that is explored
throughout my works in relation to African Fashion and culture. This African
colour scheme allows me to give a blind meaning behind the work that is seen to
be non conceptual. The process in creating artworks like pollution in colour starts
off with several different found concepts that have already been practised and
experimented with before creating the final piece. An example of a practised
concept in relation to Pollution in colour would be a smaller batik piece that has
added watercolour and ink details. After completing the smaller piece of batik,
experimenting with the colours and effects of mixing dye and watercolour onto
fabric, I liked the outcomes effect and so I experimented more with watercolour in
my sketchbook. The experimentations of watercolour consisted of different brush
strokes from light to dark, the effects that different shades of colour being combined
gives and how the layout of the final piece would look like. While creating the final
piece I chose to experiment rather than follow a specific plan to how my outcome
would end up looking.

My Love Of Reading
Reading is an essential part of life and is the cornerstone of learning. Without it,
you wouldn t be anything in life. Reading is one of the most valued commodities
on earth. However, most people don t value reading as much as others do. When I
was younger, reading was something that I valued, but the older I got the less I
valued it. The library was the place that started my love for reading. Being able to
pick out of a wide variety books was what had me very excited. Rows upon rows of
books that I could choose from. Once I found the one I wanted, I took it home and
read it to my mom. Then, about a week later, my mom would take me back to the
place filled with books I wanted to read. Being such a young age, I could only read
books out of the kids section. I loved reading books like blues clues, elmo, and the
little train that could, but I thought I was ready for the big boy books. My mom
would let me pick out a bigger book on occasion. But, I didn t actually know how to
read them so I pretended like I knew how. My mom would help me on words that I
didn t understand how to say. After awhile, I could almost read my mom full page
of a book. If i m being honest, I would only get the books to look at the pictures.
That started to change as I got into kindergarten. Mrs. Fudge, my kindergarten

may be commonly used, misused, or abused by my future students. I became
overwhelmed; however, I started remembering about an article that I read in my local
newspaper. This article discussed how methamphetamine has become a prevalent
issue in many small communities. I also found a statistic that blew my mind and
made me want to research this drug because of the effects it may have on my
potential students life and learning. According to the United States government,
reported in 2008, approximately 13 million people over the age of 12 have used
methamphetamine(Foundation for a Drug Free World, n.d.). That is a lot of young

Students who are subjected to this environment can have issues as a direct result of
this drug and also additional issues resulting from family members who are suffering
from addiction. Babies from mothers who use methamphetamine during the time of
pregnancy has a higher rate for premature birth and/or full term babies that exhibit
behaviors/symptoms of a premature baby (i.e. trouble swallowing, etc.) and have a
higher rate of mental disabilities (Norquist Spalding, 2012). Children are often
subjected to many health problems due to exposure to harmful, dangerous chemicals
used to make methamphetamine and/or to the actual drug from the toxic residue that
remains during the cooking process (Norquist Spalding, 2012). According to Norquist
and Spalding (2012), many children suffer abuse, neglected of basic necessities (i.e.
food, sleep, etc.), treated with aggressive actions, suffer emotional and behavioral
issues, etc. (Norquist Spalding, 2012). Many of these children struggle in school
because they are not coming prepared to learn and do not have the proper support
outside of the classroom. Many of them are lacking sleep and food. These are huge
distractions that hinder children learning because the results are often a lack of

The Code Of Dress Code Busting
All anyone ever hears about these days is the way people dress and what s
appropriate and what s not. It s all a matter of opinion. At least that s what they all
say, until someone gets busted for dress code at school. Then all of the sudden it
doesn t matter what anyone s opinion is. It s the opinion of the person doing the
dress codebusting. So many schools across the country have established a dress
code policy these days, some being mediocre and others taking it to the extreme.
One outfit could be revealing to teacher A, and that same outfit could be considered
perfectly fine to teacher B. After all it is a matter of opinion but the person who
catches the dress code violation is the one in the end who gets to decide, so no one
else s opinions end up mattering. Dress code shouldn t be becoming so important
though and teachers and staff members shouldn t need to make clothing more
