Howrah Bridge
TheHowrahBridgeisabalancedcantileverbridgeovertheHooghlyRiverinWestBengal,India.
Commissionedin1943,thebridgewasoriginallynamedtheNewHowrahBridge,becauseitreplaceda
pontoonbridgeatthesamelocationlinkingthecitiesofHowrahandKolkata.On14June1965,itwas
renamedRabindraSetuafterthegreatBengalipoetRabindranathTagore,whowasthefirstIndianand
AsianNobellaureate.Itcarriesadailytrafficofapproximately100,000vehiclesandpossiblymorethan

Science City
Science City Kolkata is the largest science centre in Asia. It is managed by National Council of Science
Museums, Ministry of Culture, Government of India. It is located at the crossing of Eastern
Metropolitan Bypass and J. B. S. Haldane Avenue in East Topsia. Saroj Ghose, the first director general of
NCSM, is credited with having conceptualised this centre in 1997. This centre was inaugurated by two
parts: the ‘Convention Centre Complex’ was unveiled on 21 December 1996 by Paul Jozef Crutzen in
presence of the then chief minister Jyoti Basu and the whole centre was opened by the then prime
minister Inder Kumar Gujral on 1 July 1997.

NakhodaMasjid
TheNakhodaMusjidthelargestMuslimMosqueinWestBengalandeasternIndiahaalonghistory.
Before1854thereusedtobetwodifferentmosquesatthepresentsite.HajiZakariahwhowas(Kutchi)
CutchiMemonmerchantandbusinesstycooninthosedayswasaregularmusallee(devotee).The
CutchiMemonareaMuslimcommunitywhocametoCalcuttaround1823onwards.HajiZakariawas
theleaderofotherSunniMuslimcommunitywhoinhabitedthesurroundingareasofthepresent
musjid.ThemosquewasnamedNakhodameaningMariner.Reconstructionworkstartedin1926and
wascompletedin1935.Thetotalcostincurredfortheconstructionwas1,500,000Indianrupeesin1926

The Mother House Of The Missionaries Of Charity
TheMissionariesofCharityisaCatholicreligiouscongregationestablishedin1950byMotherTeresa,now
knownintheCatholicChurchasSaintTeresaofCalcutta.Asof2020,itconsistedof5,167religioussisters.
Missionariescareforthosewhoincluderefugees,formerprostitutes,thementallyill,sickchildren,abandoned
children,lepers,peoplewithAIDS,theaged,andconvalescent.Theyhaveschoolsthatarerunbyvolunteersto
teachabandonedstreetchildrenandrunsoupkitchensaswellasotherservicesaccordingtothecommunity
needs.Theseservicesareprovided,withoutcharge,topeopleregardlessoftheirreligionorsocialstatus.

ShaheedMinar
TheShaheedMinar,formerlyknownastheOchterlonyMonument,isamonumentinKolkatathatwas
erectedin1828inmemoryofMajor-generalSirDavidOchterlony,commanderoftheBritishEastIndia
Company,tocommemoratebothhissuccessfuldefenseofDelhiagainsttheMarathasin1804andthe
victoryoftheEastIndiaCompany’sarmedforcesovertheGurkhasintheAnglo-NepaleseWar,also
knownastheGurkhaWar.ItwasdesignedbyJ.P.Parkerandpaidforfrompublicfunds.On9August
1969,itwasrededicatedtothememoryofthemartyrsoftheIndianfreedommovementandrenamedthe

BelurMath
Belur Math is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, founded by
Swami Vivekananda, the chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. It is located on the west bank of
Hooghly River, Belur, West Bengal, India. The temple is the heart of the Ramakrishna movement. It is
notable for its architecture that fuses Hindu, Islamic, Buddhist, and Christian art and motifs as a

The AliporeMuseum
AliporeCentralCorrectionalHomeisanationalhistoriclandmarklocatedintheheartofKolkata.This116year
oldbuilding,alongwiththePresidencyJail,isontheGradeIlistofheritagesitesofKolkata.Constructedin1906,
andspreadover15.2acres,thiscolonialerainstitutionabutsTolly'sNullahandcanbeidentifiedeasilywithits
characteristicbrick-redwalls.TheAliporeJailorAliporeCentralJail,isaprisoninAlipore,Kolkata,wherepolitical
prisonerswerekeptunderBritishrule,amongthemSubhasChandraBose.ItalsohousedtheAliporeJail
Press.ThejailsiteisbeingdevelopedasanIndependencemuseuminthenameofthemartyrswhowere
