Best Indian Sherwani for Men

A sherwani is a traditional outfit that originated in South Asia and evolved in India during the Mughal period. Inspired by the Persian outfit called Balaba, the Sherwani is a long-sleeved outer garment that is predominantly worn by South Asian men.

It is knee-length and buttoned down at the front. It is similar to the Indian outer garments, Achkan and Angarkha. The sherwani is usually worn over the kurta, which is paired with a pajama or any other bottom garment, to provide an extra layer of elegance.

Originally meant for the Islamic royalty and the British nobility, the sherwani dress soon evolved to become typical occasion wear for the common men as well. Various cultural components were combined to create the sherwani. It started out with a loose, knee-length coat that had a high neck and a front that was buttoned down.

One of the most popular types of sherwanis is the Jodhpuri Sherwani. Originating from the region of Jodhpur in the state of Rajasthan, India, the Jodhpuri Sherwani is also known as Bandhgala. It has a unique, structured silhouette that includes a Nehru collar or a Mandarin collar and a buttoned front.

The Pathani Sherwani has its origins in Afghanistan. Modeled after the Pashtun dress called Perahan tunban, the Pathani Sherwani is typically a part of the ensemble called Pathani Suit. The sherwani is usually worn over a long kurta with matching salwar and usually has a tailored and fitted silhouette that would give the wearer a sharp look.

The Achkan Sherwani is modelled after the traditional Indian garb called Achkan. However, it differs from the latter with its straight-cut silhouette and is worn as an outer garment in a mens ethnic suit. One of the unique features of the Achkan Sherwani dress is the high mandarin collar, which gives a look of grandeur to those who wear it.

Like the Achkan, the Angrakha is also an outfit with Indian roots, and the Angrakha Sherwani is modeled after this traditional Indian outfit. It has incorporated several elements of the Angrakha like the wrap-around front and an asymmetrical silhouette.

As mentioned earlier, sherwanis have also evolved to suit the needs of contemporary fashion trends and contemporary men. One such example is the Indowestern Sherwani. This sherwani design combines elements of Indian fashion like traditional motifs and embroidery along with elements of Western fashion like asymmetric silhouettes, short sherwani length, and combining unconventional hues.

Sherwanis are available in a myriad of colors, each with its own purpose and serving the needs of different occasions. There are certain colors that are always in trend and are considered classics while there are other colors that seasonally come into trend. Before choosing the right color of sherwani for yourself, identify your skin tone. Sherwani for Men
