What technical considerations do we include in crafting the Reading Program?
Bottom Up - meaning is text-driven, and that the reader has to dig meaning from the text before meaningful learning can occur. The reader must first decode the printed symbols into meaningful units, such as letters, words, and phrases, and then assemble them into a coherent representation of the text's meaning . READING MODELS
Top Down - comprehension emanates from the prior knowledge of the reader which s/he brings to the interpretation or understanding of the text s/he reads READING MODELS
Interactive Compensatory reading comprehension strategy that emphasizes the interaction between the reader and the text. This model assumes that reading is an active process that involves the use of various reading strategies to construct meaning from the text. READING MODELS
Whole Language approach in reading is viewed as a natural process that occurs when readers engage with meaningful, authentic texts in a supportive learning environment. READING MODELS
Basal- Approach to teaching reading that uses a structured, sequential series of reading materials, often referred to as "basal readers." Basal readers are collections of texts that increase in difficulty as the student progresses through the series READING MODELS
A balanced reading program is an approach to teaching reading that incorporates multiple strategies and techniques to help students develop the skills they need to become proficient readers. WHAT IS A BALANCED READING PROGRAM? The goal of a balanced reading program is to create a comprehensive and flexible curriculum that meets the needs of all students.
