Tableau 2023.1 & Beyond…. Or why should I think about upgrading? Bulgaria Tableau User Group (BGTUG) Q3 2024 Meeting Gergana Ilieva
Agenda Set the stage Tableau 2023.1 Tableau 2023.2 Tableau 2023.3 Tableau 2024.1 Tableau 2024.2
What is this all about? This is: Not an extensive overview of all new features Not a review of all Tableau products Not a demo This: Is an overview of the newly launched features I found most appealing Is focused mainly on - Tableau Cloud, Tableau Desktop & Tableau Server Is an attempt to sparkle discussions about upgrading older software around companies
Tableau 2023.1 - 1 Most notable new features: Dynamic axis titles - Before adding dynamic axis titles was very involving. Google Drive Share files support - need to authenticate with the Google account associated with the drive
Tableau 2023.1 - 2 Most notable new features: Cross-database join - Previously everything was ingested into Hyper, causing performance problems for larger tables. Now, the cross-join is executed locally in the database with the larger size. Identity Pools for Tableau Server - You can add additional pools sourcing users from a local identity store. Really useful for organizations with external users who need access to Tableau and are not part of the corporate active directory Publish to Personal Space
Tableau 2023.2 - 1 Interesting features to keep in mind: Unified Tooltips - Consistent way to present information , combines a maximum of 6 previous tooltips, into one which prioritizes information based on relevance. It is available for pills on all shelves. Line Patterns - New styling capability, allowing any trend line to be represented differently. This would help authors to convey nuances.
Tableau 2023.2 - 2 Interesting features to keep in mind: Editable alternative visual text - Great accessibility feature, allowing authors to edit the automatically generated text, providing even more context. Amazon S3 connector (beta) - Easier way to connect to files stored in your S3 bucket. Available only for Tableau Cloud or through Exchange.
Tableau 2023.3 Keep in mind that: Dynamic axis ranges - allows users to automatically adjust the axis range based on the data in the view (could be used with parameters as well). Command cancellation - Helps with our frustration :) Pause updates when executing a heavier command. A user will be prompted with a cancel button to pause all auto updates. Suspend extract refreshes for inactive data sources - done automatically for inactive published data sources with full extract refreshes that occur more frequently than once a week.
Tableau 2024.1 Let’s travel through the clouds: Introduction of Tableau Pulse - powered by Tableau AI, a suite of predictive and generative capabilities. The platform automatically detects events and proactively flags changes. Data can be further explored by using natural language and supporting visual explanations. Generic OpenID protocol support - With this protocol in place, companies can use a combination of the UI and REST API to configure SSO through their identity provider for Tableau Cloud. Email customization - Subscriptions and alert e-mails can now be sent through a company’s e-mail domain. Activity Log Enhancements - Monitoring the Tableau Cloud becomes much easier. You can find over 200 types of events in the log, including Tableau Pulse. Tableau Cloud on AWS marketplace - Who doesn’t hate procurement? If we can have a simpler billing and faster tracing of IT spending, are you ready to say no?
Tableau 2024.2 - 1 Look out for: Viz extensions - shared through Tableau Exchange (~30 new types)! Allows additional visualization types on the Marks Card. Will start appearing at the very bottom of the Marks Card -> Add Extensions Individual control formatting - Every author can choose whether to format all controls of the same type or just one of them. Legends, quick filters, parameter controls, etc no longer need to look the same. Multi-fact relationships - Various datasets could now be brought together through shared dimensions (time, geography, etc).
Tableau 2024.2 - 2 Look out for: Data Connect - Tableau now will share the burden of managing Tableau Bridge (without it on-prem data or private cloud data won’t be available in Tableau Cloud). Incremental extracts with subrange refresh - helps reduce costs associated with full extract refreshes by creating incremental refreshes for a specified date range Einstein Copilot - new AI assistant that allows the user to utilize natural language prompts for creating and editing visualizations and calculations. Additionally, allows users to automatically generate descriptions for data sources, workbooks, etc. Components will be launched through July - August 2024.
