Botanical classification Botanical name- phylllanthus niruri Linn. Family name- euphorbiaceae . Kula- Erand kula . Classical name- bhumyamlaki . Sanskrit names- bhudhatri , tamalaki , bahupatra , bahuphala . 3

Botanical description Perennial herb, 18 to 24 cm . in height. Leaves- small, bearing leaflets. Flower- yellow. Fruits- grow on the under surface of the leaves, like Emblica officinalis , and are tripartate . Seeds- whitish, tender. The shrub grows in rainy season. 4

External uses Paste of the Bhumyamalaki leaves is applied on wound, edema and dermatitis. Paste prepared from Bhumyamalaki leaves crushed with salt is used in fractures for external application . 9

Internal uses Digestive system- Bhumyamalaki is an appetizer, digestive, liver stimulant, laxative, carminative and alleviates thirst. Bhumyamalaki is useful in diarrhea and dysentery. It is useful in bleeding disorders. Bhumyamalaki whole plant powder + rice water is useful in menorrhagia , leucorrhoea, dysuria , diabetes, skin disease . 10

Internal uses Bhumyamalaki also benefits in chronic malaria fever and hepatic splenomegaly . Bhumyamalaki powder is also very useful in skin diseases as it nourishes the skin properly.  Bhumyamalaki powder should be taken with rice water to alleviate gynecological health problems specially leucorrhoea (white discharges from female reproductive organs); heavy bleeding during menstrual cycle. Bhumyamalaki powder is also very beneficial in liver problems including hepatitis B. 11

Parts Used & Dosage Whole plant. Dosage of whole plant decoction is 10-20 ml powder is 3- 6 gm .  12

Srotogamitwa Dosha - kaphapittaghna . Dhatu - asthi (in fracture), rasa (appetizer, digestive), rakta (stimulates liver), useful in bleeding disorders, cough and asthama . Mala- purisha ( constipative ), urine( dysuria ), pyuria . 13

THERAPEUTIC EFFECT OF BHUMYAMALAKI CHURNA IN THE MANAGEMENT OF PITTAJA RAKTA PRADARA Amongst various gynecological disorders, Asrigdara is one of most frequent complaints and its incidence becomes higher with civilization of community. In Ayurvedic literature most conditions of excessive uterine bleeding p/v are described under arthava ativruddhi , raktayoni and asrigdara . 60 patients being diagnosed with rakta pradara according to inclusion and exclusion criteria were divided in 2 groups of 30 each. Group 1: 30 patients were treated with bhumyamalaki churna in capsule form. Group 2: 30 patients were treated with placebo. All the patients were assessed by different parameters like color, consistency and interval of menstrual cycle before and after treatment. The results were analyzed statistically before and after treatment, at end of 3 cycles. Finally out of 30 patients in trial group 15 patients were completely cured, 15 patients were improved and none of the patients unchanged. During the treatment no side effects were observed. 15
