BIGGEST Projects IN LESOTHO IS CONSTRUCTION OF DAMS and mines.
introduction There are several dams and mines in Lesotho but I decided to talk about Katse dam ,Mohale dam and Muela dam. Lets’eng Diamond and Liqobong Diamond mine.
MOHALE DAM is concrete faced rock fill dam in Lesotho .it is the second dam under phase 1B of the proposed Lesotho Highlands Water Projects. Mohale Dam is 145metres high and 620 metres long . It is the highest concrete filled dam in South Africa.
The Mohale dam then formed the 21.2 square kilometer Mohale reservoir. A 32 kilometer tunnel bring water from Mohale reservoir to the Katse reservoir. Before these dams were constructed, Lesotho had to depend on South Africa .
KATSE DAM is a concrete arc dam on the Malibamatso river in Lesotho and is Africa second largest double arch dam. The Katse Dam was build as a part of the first phase of the Lesotho Highlands Water Projects .It curves from the side to the side as well from top to bottom .The wall is 185metres high, 60metres wide at the base and 9metres wide at to p. Length of the wall is 710 metres.
KATSE DAM The Katse dam and transfer tunnel are part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project and are constructed from the basalt of Drakensberg formation . The project will supply water to the main industrial area of South Africa around Pretoria , Johannesburg and Vereeniging.
MUELA DAM The Muela Dam which is located in Butha-Buthe is a double curvature concrete arch dam build on Sandstone. The dam has an ogee spillway and cascade stilling basin for energy dissipation .The. Muela Dam is a 55 metres high double curvature arch forming the tail pond of the Muela Hydropower station.
Muela hydropower station A 72MW Hydropower station is included in phase 1A of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project to allow Lesotho to become self sufficient in energy production .
Lets’eng diamond mine Lets’eng Diamond mine is operated by De Beer from 1977 to 1982 ,Lets’eng reopened in 2004 and was acquired by Gem Diamond in the late 2006.Lets’eng continues to deliver exceptional returns for its shareholders with annual production rising since the takeover from 5500 carats in 2006 to 106 704 in 2022.
Liqobong diamond mine The Liqobong diamond mine located within the Liqobong valley in the Maloti mountain ,approximately120km East Northeast of Maseru , is owned by Liqobong Mining Development Company ,a company owned by Firestone Diamonds (75 ) and the Kingdom of Lesotho(25).
