What is binge eating disorder? People with binge eating disorder often eat an unusually large amount of food and feel out of control during the binges. Unlike bulimia or anorexia, binge eaters do not throw up their food, exercise a lot, or eat only small amounts of only certain foods. Because of this, binge eaters are often overweight or obese.

People with binge eating disorder also Eat more quickly than usual during binge episodes Eat until they are uncomfortably full Eat when they are not hungry Eat alone because of embarrassment Fell disgusted, depressed, or guilty after overeating

What causes binge eating disorder? Factors which can increase our risk of developing problems with binge eating includes : A lack of confidence and low self-esteem. Depression Or anxiety. Moments of stress, anger, or loneliness. Unsatisfied with your body & feeling under pressure to be thin. Had stressful events in the past.

Who is affected from binge eating? Anyone can affect from binge eating. While the condition is slightly more common in women than men, the numbers of men and women affected are more equal than in other eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa. The disease tends to develop first in young adults, however many people do not seek help until they are in their 30s Or 40s.

How binge eating is treated? The main treatments are : Self-help programmes – this can be done individually with a book or online course, or as part of a self-help support group Specialist group interventions Individual psychological therapy-like cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) Medication called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIS)

What are the characteristics of BED? Frequent episodes of eating abnormally large amount of food. Frequent feelings of being unable to control what or how much is being eaten.

How common is BED? BED is probably the most common eating disorder. BED is estimated to affect 2% of all adults. BED is slightly more common in women than men(about 60% of people with BED are female) BED is equally distributed across different races and ethnicities.

What are the complications of the BED? Diseases that accompany obesity, including: • Diabetes (type II) • High blood pressure • High cholesterol levels • Gallbladder disease • Heart disease • Certain types of cancer

What is the connection between food and feelings As humans we are biologically programmed to focus on food when we’re under stress. As a culture, food is a cornerstone of tradition, family and connection. Food can serve as a distraction or a numbing agent.
