Oral Cavity Of Humans Prepared by Joel Daniel Class XI-A

Mouth The alimentary canal begins with an anterior opening – the mouth. Mouth opens out posteriorly through the anus. Mouth leads to Buccal cavity or oral cavity. The oral cavity has a number of teeth and a muscular tongue. The first mechanical and chemical digestion of food takes place in the mouth.

Mouth Food is chewed or masticated mechanically in the mouth . A bolus or lump is formed by the saliva and tongue. The buccal cavity performs two major function- mastication of food and facilitation of swallowing.

Teeth Teeth are the organ for mastication. Human teeth are:- Thecodont :- Because human teeth are embedded into bony sockets (tooth sockets) of jaws. Diphydont :- Because human teeth are produced into two sets namely temporary teeth and permanent teeth . Milk teeth are replaced by permanent teeth.

Teeth (Cont.) Hetrodont :- Because human teeth are of different shape and size. Human teeth are of following types :- Incisors (I) – They are used to cut food. They are 4 in number. Canines (C) – They are used to tear the raw food. They are also 4 in number. Premolars (P) – They are used to chew/crush food. They are total 8 in number.

Teeth (Cont.) d. Molars (M) – They are also used to chew food. They are 12 in number.

Dental Formula Representation of all kinds of teeth in upper and lower jaws is termed as the ‘Dental Formula’. Upper Jaw (U) / Lower Jaw (L) = I(2)+C(1)+P(2)+M(3)/I(2)+C(1)+P(2)+M(3)

Tongue It is a large , muscular highly mobile organ. It lies mainly in the oral cavity and partly in the pharynx.

Tongue (Cont.) Functions :- It is an organ of taste. It helps in chewing by sending the food under the grinding teeth. It aides in swallowing by pushing the food bolus backwards. It acts as a brush to clean the teeth. It also plays role in speech , to form words along with lips .
