TYPES OF BIO CHIPS
09/25/24
DNA chips: These chips contain snippets of DNA that can be synthesized on the
chip or laid down in situ. The DNA fragments can range from 25 bases
(oligonucleotide arrays) to hundreds of bases (cDNA arrays). Researchers can use
DNA chips to analyze thousands of genes at once by hybridizing the gene probes
with DNA. The hybridization can be detected by fluorescence, and instruments can
read the surface of the chip. Biochips have helped researchers identify the
estimated 80,000 genes in human DNA much more quickly.
Digital microfluidic biochips: These chips have a microfluidic array where cells
can be configured to perform storage, functional operations, and transport fluid
droplets.
Lab-on-a-chip: This is another type of biochip.
