Biography of Matthew Carluccio

Matthew Carluccio, an award-winning Executive Producer with NBC, has dedicated nearly
three decades to the world of broadcast news and editorial production. His professional
journey reflects a steady focus on accuracy, strong leadership, and the ability to manage
complex stories under tight deadlines. Through his contributions to Dateline NBC, TODAY,
Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist, and NBC News Specials, he has built a reputation as a
trusted producer who consistently delivers news content that connects with audiences.

His career has been recognized with multiple Emmy Awards and Edward R. Murrow Awards,
achieved both individually and as part of his teams. These honors highlight his excellence in
categories such as breaking news, writing, and overall newsroom achievement.

Education and Early Career
Matthew grew up in Toms River, NJ, where his natural curiosity and interest in the wider
world shaped his ambitions. His parents, with careers in law and psychology, influenced his
perspective and gave him an appreciation for analysis and understanding human behavior.
Combined with strong academic dedication, these influences encouraged him to pursue
journalism.

After attending a boarding school in Pennsylvania, he studied at Clark University in
Massachusetts. He chose Political Science and Psychology as his areas of study, disciplines
that allowed him to explore both institutional and personal motivations. These studies
provided him with insight into how stories are framed and how they impact audiences.

Carluccio graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and moved to New York City to
begin his career in television. His first position was as an Assistant to the Executive
Producer at King World TV, a syndication company known for distributing popular shows
such as The Oprah Winfrey Show and Jeopardy. This entry-level role exposed him to the
daily responsibilities of media production and allowed him to learn directly from seasoned
television executives.

He soon transitioned to NBC as an Associate Producer for Dateline NBC. In that role, he
worked on investigative reports, general assignments, and long-format features. His
responsibilities included writing, editing, off-air reporting, and booking guests. This work
helped him strengthen his editorial judgment and develop a broad skill set.

During this time, he produced hundreds of reports while also taking on challenging field
assignments. His career expanded to include international coverage, such as reporting
during Operation Iraqi Freedom from Jordan, Iraq, and Afghanistan. After a period at NBC’s
Chicago Bureau, he was chosen to lead a task force covering the criminal case involving
Michael Jackson in Southern California.

In 2005, he moved to TODAY as an anchor producer. In this role, he frequently traveled with
anchors to manage coverage of high-profile stories. Matthew helped produce special
broadcasts from Cuba, Belize, the Vatican, and Antarctica, where he played a role in the first
live network news broadcast from the South Pole Station. He also worked on NBC’s
coverage of seven Olympic Games, beginning in Torino in 2006 and continuing through
Beijing in 2022.

Management
By 2008, he had been promoted to Supervising Producer at TODAY, overseeing a team of
ten and managing daily assignments. This role required him to balance editorial judgment
with leadership responsibilities.

In 2011, Carluccio was promoted again, this time to Senior Producer. In this capacity, he
managed the program’s first hour and coordinated the efforts of producers, writers, and
researchers. Under his leadership, TODAY maintained its top-rated status for an
unprecedented 16 consecutive years.

In 2014, he advanced to Executive Producer for the weekend editions of TODAY. With this
promotion, he assumed responsibility for all production and editorial decision-making. He
also helped identify and mentor new on-air talent, some of whom went on to become
anchors for the program.

In 2016, he was allowed to create and launch a new extension of the TODAY brand. This
effort resulted in Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist. Nearly a decade later, the program has
become a critical and ratings success, strengthening the TODAY portfolio.

By 2020, his responsibilities grew further when he became Executive Producer of NBC
News Specials. In this role, Matthew managed network coverage of major national and
global events, including elections, conventions, debates, inaugurations, and state funerals.
His recent work has included the funeral and election of the Pope, the death of Queen
Elizabeth, the coronation of King Charles, and the 2024 Presidential election cycle.

His achievements have been recognized with numerous industry awards. He has received
four Emmy Awards for his work on TODAY and two more for NBC News Specials. Alongside
his teams, he has also won three Edward R. Murrow Awards for Breaking News, including
consecutive wins in 2023 and 2024 for coverage of Hamas’ attack on Israel and the
attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

Personal Life
Beyond his career, Carluccio places great value on family. He has been married for 18 years
and is the father of three boys. Along with his wife and their two dogs, he lives in Northwest
Philadelphia. Balancing his demanding professional schedule with family life has made him
a post-pandemic “super commuter,” a challenge he has taken on with dedication.

His personal interests are wide-ranging. He enjoys reading, listening to podcasts, and
following both television and film. He is also active in youth sports, coaching baseball and
flag football. In addition, he spends time skiing and surfing. At home, he often prepares
Italian meals while cheering for the New York Yankees, his lifelong favorite baseball team.

Matthew Carluccio has built a career defined by nearly three decades of commitment,
adaptability, and leadership in broadcast journalism. From early assignments at Dateline
NBC to his current role guiding major productions for NBC News Specials, he has
consistently demonstrated the ability to deliver trusted news while mentoring teams and
shaping the future of the industry. His work continues to leave a lasting impact, and Matthew
remains a respected figure in American television news.
