Biomagnification Definition : Biomagnification , also known as bioamplification , or biological magnification is the increase in concentration of a substance, such as the pesticide DDT, that occurs in a food chain

Biomagnification When it’s happen Most often,  biomagnification occurs  in the higher trophic levels of the food chain/web , where exposure to chemicals takes place mostly through food consumption rather than water uptake.  Biomagnification  is a specific case of bioaccumulation and is different from bioconcentration .

Biomagnification D icholoro- d iphenyl- t richloroethane (DDT) An insecticide used in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s entered the environment in run-off from land DDT Was banned in 1972 after the Bald Eagle population had a noticeable crash.

Biomagnification Process of Biomagnification

Biomagnification How to control Biomagnification ? Do not put harmful substances (e.g., used motor oil) into the water system or storm drains. ... Avoid toxic chemical pesticides. Eat certified organic foods when possible. ... Avoid fishing or spending time in contaminated areas.
