BME can be divided into 4 sub-areas
•Bioengineering focus on pure research; with the aid of
mathematical model and simulations.
•Medical engineering is directed to the study, design
and construction of instrumentation, sensors, and
prosthesis for the medical field.

Clinical or hospital engineering focuses in certification
and testing of medical equipment and hospital
activities, such as design, adequacy and execution of
installations, consulting for acquisition of equipment,
training of maintenance teams.
Rehabilitation engineering aims the development of
electronic and mechanical systems for the
improvements of the quality of life of physically
challenged people.
