•Bird flu is also called Avian influenza. It belongs to the
orthomyxoviridae virus family.
•It refers to infection of birds with avian influenza Type A/H5N1
Virus. These viruses occur naturally in wild aquatic birds but these
are also found in domestic poultry.
•Avian influenza are very contagious among birds and some of
these viruses can sicken and even kill certain domesticated bird
species including chickens, ducks.

H5N1 VIRUS
•H5N1 virus has the ability to survive for extended periods of time.
•Birds infected with H5N1 continue to release the virus mostly in
feces and saliva .
•The H5N1 virus is generally spherical shaped and between 80-120
nm in diameter. Its genome is made up of RNA which encode with
proteins.
Cont….
•The proteins are the hemagglutinin(H) and neuraminidase
(N).
•The H5N1 virus become more easily transmissible among
humans.
SPREADING
•Avian influenza is spread by contact between infected and
healthy birds.
•Mostly influenza virus is spread from nostrils, mouth and eyes
of infected birds.
•Bird flu transmitted readily from farm to farm by airborne
faces contaminated dust and soil.
•These viruses are also spread from one place to another place
by migratory birds.
SYMPTOMS
•Lack of energy or vocalization
•Swelling of head, eyelids, legs
•Headache
•Fever
•Sneezing or coughing
•Abnormal behavior like difficulty in walking
•Sudden death
PRECAUTIONS
•Wash your hands with warm water and soap, especially
before and after handling food, in particular raw poultry.
•Use different utensils for cooked and raw meat.
•Avoid contact from infected birds.
•Regularly spraying of antibacterial or antiviral drugs in poultry
farms.
•The flu drugs oseltamivirand zanamivirshould work against
bird flu. These drugs must be given soon after symptoms
appear.
CONCLUSION
•Avian influenza is a public health threat that has the potential
to cause serious illness and death in birds as well as in other
animals.
•Due to lack of proper drug this virus causes a large number of
mortality in birds population at short time.
