Dr. A J CRONIN Archibald Joseph Cronin (19 July 1896 – 6 January 1981) was a Scottish physician and novelist . His best-known novel The Citadel (1937) tells of a Scottish doctor in a Welsh mining village, who then shoots up the medical ladder in London. Cronin knew both venues, as a medical inspector of mines and as a doctor in Harley Street. The book promoted some controversial medical ethics that helped to inspire the National Health Service. Birth- Introduction "Birth" is an excerpt from "The Citadel" that revolves around Andrew Manson who just graduated out of medical school. It is an account of how the newly graduated medical practitioner helped in bringing Joe and Susan’s child into this world despite going through a tough time with his girlfriend Christine.
Characters Dr. Andrew Manson: Manson is a newly qualified doctor which took the job as an assistant to Dr. Page. His workplace was a small mining town. He is optimistic, diligent and efficient. Joe Morgan: He works as a driller at mines. Morgan is in his forties and lives in Blaenelly , a small Welsh town. In his 20 years of marriage, he has not a child yet. Mrs Morgan: She is wife Joe Morgan and she is expecting her first child. Morgan’s Mother: She is a tall around seventy years old woman with grey hairs The Midwife: An experienced nurse who helps in childbirth. She is a contrasting character in regards to Andrew. She is helpless, fearful and untrained. Christine: She is a school teacher whom Andrew loves.
