Stem / Black Rust of Wheat

•Epidemic in the world & India
•March –April in north India
•Nov. –Dec. in South India
•Below -3000 feet
•Loss –90%

Symptoms :
•Affect all parts except roots
•Brown color pustules
•Bursting of epidermis by urediospore
•Later stage –teliospore formation
•Due to teliospore / urediospore black appearance-called
black rust
Effect on pls.
•Early ripening

•No grain formation or small in size
•Low quality flour
•Pl. –small in size
•Less tillering
•Loss of shining of seed & pls.
•Low quality straw not eaten by animals
•↓ photosynthesis
•↑Transpiration & respiration

Pathogen –Puccinia graminisf. sp. tritici
•Spores–1. Pycniospore -Pycnidial stage -O
2. Aceospore –Aecial stage –I
3. Urediospore –Uredial stage –II
4. Teliospore -Telial stage –III
5. Basidiospore –Basidial stage -IV
