MIGRANT AND REFUGEE
POLICY

13 lines13 stars

13 INDEPENDENCE
COLONIES

At the federal level, refugees
earned over $93.6 billion in
household income in 2019,
contributed $25 billion in taxes,
and provided over $68.6 billion in
spending that provided much-
needed consumer spending for
U.S. businesses. This has also
brought substantial development
for local and state taxes, with
refugees alone paying $8.7 billion
in taxes.
Refugees actually
earned more than
other households
with a median
refugee household
income of $71,400
compared to
$63,000 for typical
American families
Refugees are more likely to be of working
age: 78.2% of refugees are of working age,
compared to 61.9% for U.S.-born citizens.
Of the refugee workforce, 24% work in
general services and 13.9% in
transportation and warehousing.
Michigan Legislature recently appropriated
$3 million for a New Michiganders Fund to
help fund legal, social and other critical
integration services for new arrivals.

The United States is often described as
a nation of immigrants.
Migrants and refugees have
significantly shaped the
political and social
landscape of the USA.
Positively, they contribute to
cultural diversity, economic
growth, and innovation.
Immigration can give substantial
economic benefits – a more
flexible labour market, greater
skills base, increased demand and
a greater diversity of innovation.

Federal immigration law
determines whether a person
is an alien, as well as the
rights, duties, and obligations
associated with being an
alien in the United States. It
also provides the means by
which aliens can become
legally naturalized citizens
with full rights of citizenship.

• What benefits do immigrants get when
they come to America?
⁃ Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
(SNAP)
⁃ Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
(TANF)
⁃ Emergency Medicaid (includes labor and
delivery)
⁃ Full-Scope Medicaid
Immigrants, and especially the children and
grandchildren of immigrants, have played a
disproportionate role in the development of the
American performing arts. They have also made
fundamental contributions in many other realms of
artistic, cultural, culinary, athletic, and scientific
endeavor.

POSITION
STATEMENT

POSITIONPOSITIONPOSITION

The USA has been a country with an international fame in the topic of their position for migrant/refugees.
USA is the “land of opportunity” the “dream” they received around 1.5 million people each year and 30% of
them are Mexicans.
They are usually more helpful with refugees for example in the Ukrainian and Israel wars they have received
around 14,000 Ukrainian people and 30,000 asylum seekers from Israel.

But not everything is good
Just last year they deported more than 70,000 people and entering by an illegal way means you can’t get a normal life
and you can have a high risk of being deported.
