Body composition in overweight individual
Body composition Term refers to the percentage of fat , bone and muscle in our body.`
Importance of body composition A healthy balance between fat and muscle is vital for health and wellness. An array of evidence shows that maintaining healthy body composition increases longevity and reduces the risk of heart diseases, cancer, diabetes, etc Leads to an increase in energy level which improves self esteem.
Body fat There are two types of fat in our body.
VISCERAL FAT Also known as essential fat Around our bones, liver, kidneys, intestine and muscles. Fat in these places is required for our body to function normally. Also known as stored fat. Found in our adipose tissue. It insulates and cushions our body. It surrounds our organ and is just under the skin. Excessive stored fat is harmful to our heart. Having too much stored fat can lead to chronic diseases and conditions. SUBCUTANEOUS FAT Body fat
The accumulation of excess body fat is significant and rapidly increasing global health issue. More than 39% of adults were considered overweight (BMI>25kgm^-2) and 13% considered obese (BMI >30kgm^-2) in 2014 and the prevalence of overweight and obesity has doubled globally since 1980. Being overweight or obese is major risk for cardiovascular and metabolic disorders.
A healthy level of body fat falls in the range of 10 to 31 percent for women and 2 to 24 percent to men. We need minimal amount of fat tissue in our body for optimal health and women need more than men to preserve reproductive function. Maintaining a good level body fat involves overall body composition . Our diet must include high quality proteins that accounts for 10 to 15% of daily allowance of protein. Another 20 to 30 percent of daily calories come from heart healthy fats, with the remaining 55 to 60 percent should come from carbohydrate rich foods such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
For women and men, respectively , eating atleast 1,200 and 1,500 well balanced calories helps keep the metabolism active. If we go below this , our metabolism can slow down , causing us to conserve as much body fat as possible. Eating more calories than your body needs will cause to gain weight , mostly in the form of body fat.
