INTRODUCTION Border, otherwise known as boundary or frontier, in simple terms, is the official line separating two countries/provinces/areas that a particular government controls. Borders are the outer membrane of the territory protecting legitimate cross border flow and trade, concurrently preventing the illegal transborder movement of persons and trade that pose threat to the nation. Border Management has to strike a fine balance between security-economy-politico and social dispensation.
The important features of sovereign borders depend on variables like history of the formation of border and socio-cultural-economic links. It is a dispensation where political and physical factors intersect. Well-developed borders and well-guarded borders are inviolable. It implies a shift from a total Security approach to Security cum Development approach. Border security is invariably linked to Internal Security. India faces several factors hampering effective border management both on Eastern and Western theatre. The Indian Border Management calls for synchronisation of technology, infrastructure, and border population that is capable of dealing the geopolitical, social and economic challenges.
