2. The British Pharmacopoeia (BP)
•TheBritishPharmacopoeia(B.P.)Itwasfirstpublishedin
1864.
•Since1948,whichisseventheditionofB.P.thenew
editionofBritishPharmacopoeiaispublishedatintervals
offiveyearsi.e.1948,1953,1958,1963,1968,1973.
•After1973theneweditionwaspublishedin1980and
thenin1988,1993,1998,2003,2008.

3. After2008theneweditionwaspublishedeveryyear.
Inadditiontothepublicationofthepharmacopoeia,the
addendumsarealsopublishedfromtimetotimein
betweentwomaineditions.
TheBPcontainsmonographs,whichsetoutthe
mandatorystandardsforactivesubstances,excipientsand
formulatedpreparations,togetherwithGeneralNotices,
Appendices(testmethods,reagents,etc)andReference
Spectra.

5. The British Pharmaceutical Codex
The British Pharmaceutical Codex differs from British
Pharmacopoeia in that :
•It contains many more drugs and preparation
•It provides standards for drugs surgical dressings and
pharmaceutical preparations not included in the
British Pharmacopoeia.

6. •Itprovidesinformationontheactionsandusesofdrugs,
theirundesirableeffects,precautionandtreatmentof
poisoning.
•Itcontainformulae,methodofpreparation,dose,
containerandstorageconditionsofmostofthe
preparationswhicharestillextemporaneouslyprepared
inthepharmacyanddispensedbythepharmacists.
•Thesepreparationsincludemixtures,powders,eye
drops,eardrops,liniments,lotions,ointments,creams,
pastes,suppositoriesetc.

7. United State Pharmacopoeia & National Formulary
•TheUnitedStatesPharmacopoeiaandNational
Formulary(USP-NF)isanofficialpublicstandards–
settingauthorityforallprescriptionandover–the–
countermedicinesandotherhealthcareproducts
manufacturedorsoldintheUnitedStates.
•USPalsosetsrecognizedstandardsforfood
ingredientsanddietarysupplements.

8. TheUnitedStatesPharmacopoeiawasoriginallypublished
in1820undertheauthorityoftheUnitedStates
PharmacopoeialConventionandtheNationalFormularywas
publishedin1888undertheguidanceofAmerican
PharmaceuticalAssociation.
In1974theNationalFormularywaspurchasedbythe
UnitedStatesPharmacopoeialConventionandfrom1980
onwardsonlyoneofficialbookofdrugstandardswas
publishedundertheheading,TheUnitedStates
PharmacopoeiaandTheNationalFormulary(USP-NF).

knownas‘Martindale’PublishedbyThe
RoyalPharmaceuticalSocietyofGreatBritain
•Theterm“Extra”meansinthisinstance
“Outside”,becausethebookaimedtodescribe
drugsthatwereoutsidetheBritish
Pharmacopoeia.

•Thefirsteditionwaspublishedin1889andthe
eleventheditionwaspublishedin1989by
