Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) Educational Presentation for Students

Introduction Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a common cause of dizziness due to displaced otoconia.

Causes Dislodged otoconia from the utricle enter semicircular canals, disrupting normal vestibular function.

Pathophysiology Abnormal stimulation of hair cells in the semicircular canals causes brief episodes of vertigo.

Symptoms Sudden, brief episodes of vertigo triggered by head movements; nausea may accompany.

Diagnosis Dix-Hallpike maneuver is the primary test used to diagnose BPPV.

Treatment Epley maneuver helps reposition displaced otoconia to alleviate symptoms.

Other Treatments Semont maneuver, Brandt-Daroff exercises, and vestibular rehabilitation may be used.

Prognosis BPPV is benign but can recur; proper treatment provides symptom relief.

Summary BPPV is a mechanical disorder of the inner ear that can be effectively treated with repositioning maneuvers.
