What are some of the major questions that philosopher ponder upon?
Branches of Philosophy 1. Metaphysics The branch of philosophy which addresses questions regarding reality. Topics related to the discussion of reality include the concept of time, space, the nature of the universe , and the nature of the human being or what makes man what he is. Reality- refers to the state of existence of things independent of human consciousness. Physical things that we see, feel, taste and smell as well as the things that we cannot easily perceived or comprehend. What are your personal ideas about the nature of the world and the universe? What characteristics distinguish man from all other things that exist?
2. Epistemology The branch of philosophy which deals with the nature and extent of knowledge. the means by which man is able to know. The question of certainty of truth. Rationalism- is a theory on knowledge which believes that knowledge is a priori knowledge based on pure reasoning without the benefit of any experience. Empiricism- a theory which considers knowledge to be a posteriori knowledge or knowledge gained from experience. In your personal life, what are the things that you consider real, true, or unchanging? Did you experience a situation where you had to defend your beliefs? Share your experience in the class? Have you experience a situation where what you believe to be true turned out to be untrue? How did this experience affects you?
3. Etiology The branch of philosophy that studies causality. Teleology - the branch which deals with the question of purpose. A things purpose often considered its final or ultimate cause. Purpose - the explanation of a things function or goal. origin - the genesis of things
4. Ethics or Moral Philosophy Is a branch of philosophy that seeks to apply and analyze these concepts in various situations, contexts, and cultures , and recommends guidelines that will govern the decisions and actions of people`.
