BRAZIL Geography & Demographics

LOCATION Located in South America Bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean where it has 4,654 miles of coastline It is south of Venezuela, Guyana and Suriname, southeast of Colombia, east of Bolivia and Peru, northeast of Argentina and Paraguay, and north of Uruguay Shares a border with all but two countries in South America . Except Chile and Ecuador. The Geographic Coordinates of Brazil is 15.7833° S, 47.8667° W.

SIZE The country of Brazil occupies roughly half of South America, bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Brazil covers a total area of 8,514,215km 2 (3,287,357  sq  m) which includes 8,456,510 km 2 (3,265,080 sq mi) of land. Brazil is the largest country in south America. Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world; in terms of population (186 million in 2005) as well as land area. Brazil has one of the largest economies in the Americas and is the largest in South America Largest Portuguese speaking country.

NATURAL RESOURSES Bauxite , gold, iron ore ,manganese , nickel,phosphates,platinum,tin,rare,uranium,petroleum,hydropower and timber. With its ideal agricultural climate, Brazil boasts a healthy export trade in coffee, sugar, soya beans, textiles and electrical equipment. The country is rich in ethanol, ore, iron, gemstones, steel and oil. Recent discoveries of oil sources that could potentially hold more than 9 billion barrels of oil is helping to confirm Brazil as a major new oil exploration frontier. Green fuels, such as bio-diesel and ethanol made from sugar cane, is a growing industry where Brazil is expected to become a major leader in world markets .

REGIONS Brazil is divided into five primary geographic areas: the northern Guiana Highlands ; Brazilian Highlands ( or plateau ) central and east; the massive Amazon River Basin; Pantanal wetland areas of the southwest, and the Southern Highlands - to the west and south of Curitiba.

Cont.., The Brazilian Highlands are covered by low mountain ranges and forested river valleys. From Rio de Janeiro - north to Fortaleza, a series of higher mountain ranges form a natural barrier between the Atlantic Ocean and the country's interior . The Pantanal is the world's largest freshwater wetland, a seasonally flooded plain fed by the tributaries of many rivers. For size comparison, it's almost 10 times the size of the Florida Everglades .

The Amazon is the world's largest tropical rain forest. It's drained by the huge Amazon River, and more than 200 of its tributaries - with more than a dozen of those tributaries being on ( The Longest Rivers of the World ) list. The Sao Francisco is the longest river completely within Brazil's borders. he Guiana Highlands , a relatively flat-topped mountainous area covered by rain forest, stretches across much of northern South America . It's home to many of the planet's most spectacular waterfalls, and Brazil's highest point.
