Lines of Curvature: Exploring
Oscar Niemeyer's Architectural
Philosophy
NAME : SATVIK CHANDRAKANT JADHAV. COLLEGE :T.C.O.A.

PHILOSOPHY :
•Oscar Niemeyer, the Brazilian architect, was
known for his innovative and futuristic designs,
often incorporating flowing lines and bold curves.
His philosophy emphasized the integration of
architecture with its surroundings, seeking
harmony between nature and built environments.
Niemeyer believed in the social role of
architecture, aiming to create spaces that inspire
and uplift people. He embraced modernism but
also infused his designs with a sense of Brazilian
identity and culture. Niemeyer's work often
challenged conventional notions of space and
form, reflecting his belief in the power of
architecture to shape society and human
experience.

ARCHITECTURAL STYLE :
•Curves and Organic Forms: Niemeyer favored flowing,
organic shapes in his designs, which he believed reflected
the natural world and created a sense of harmony and
fluidity. He once famously said, "I am not attracted to
straight angles or to the straight line, hard and inflexible,
created by man.“
•Social Responsibility: Niemeyer believed that architecture
should serve the needs of society and promote social
equality. He saw architecture as a tool for social change
and advocated for the creation of buildings and cities that
fostered inclusivity and community.
•Brutalism and Concrete: Niemeyer was a pioneer of the
use of reinforced concrete in architecture. He embraced
the Brutalist style, which emphasized raw materials and
exposed structures. Concrete allowed him to create bold,
sculptural forms that challenged traditional notions of
architecture.
•Sensual and Spiritual: Niemeyer's architecture often evokes a sense of
sensuality and spirituality. He sought to create spaces that engaged the senses
and inspired awe, whether through the play of light and shadow or the use of
monumental scale.
•Optimism and Futurism: Niemeyer was an optimist who believed in the
potential for architecture to shape a better future. His designs for Brasília, in
particular, embodied a vision of a modern, utopian city that symbolized
progress and innovation.
•Overall, Niemeyer's philosophy emphasized the expressive and transformative
potential of architecture, as well as its role in shaping society and inspiring
human experience
