Breast Cancer Awareness Month Presented by Dr. Derek T. Moore, Medical Director InnovAge PACE – Henry Avenue
What is Breast Cancer? • Breast cancer happens when cells in the breast grow out of control. • It can start in different parts of the breast – the ducts or the lobules. • Early detection can save lives through screenings and self-exams.
Why Awareness Matters for African-American Women • African-American women are more likely to be diagnosed at a younger age. • They are also more likely to have aggressive forms of breast cancer. • Early detection and regular screening are critical for better outcomes. • Education and access to care make a major difference.
Signs and Symptoms • A new lump or mass in the breast or underarm • Changes in breast size or shape • Nipple discharge (other than breast milk) • Skin dimpling or redness on the breast • Pain in the breast or nipple area
How to Do a Self Breast Exam 1. Look at your breasts in the mirror with shoulders straight and arms on your hips. 2. Raise your arms and look for changes in shape or skin. 3. Feel your breasts while lying down using circular motions. 4. Repeat while standing or in the shower. 5. Report any changes to your doctor right away.
Screening and Mammograms • Women age 40 and older should talk to their doctor about yearly mammograms. • Screening helps find cancer before symptoms start. • Many centers offer free or low-cost mammograms. • Ask our PACE staff for help scheduling your screening.
Healthy Lifestyle Tips • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. • Stay active with regular physical activity. • Limit alcohol intake. • Avoid smoking. • Maintain a healthy weight.
Hope and Support • Early detection saves lives — you are not alone. • Support groups and care teams are available. • InnovAge PACE is here to support your health journey. • Together, we can fight breast cancer with knowledge and care.
