Facts and Myths about Breastfeeding!
Colostrum is made in the mother’s body in the 2 nd trimester of pregnancy! Myth Fact
Fact Colostrum is the first milk which is produced in the breast as early as 20 th week of pregnancy. Every drop is precious and even few drops is great for the baby’s tummy, especially for NICU babies. Hand expression or breastfeeding should be started soon after birth.
Breastfeeding should not be done during any sickness! Myth Fact
During sickness, colostrum or breastmilk both carry antibodies from the mother and pass it to the baby. Paracetemetol meds like Crocin/ Dolo are safe while breastfeeding. Unless your doctor specifically say not to, continue breastfeeding as usual and follow good hygiene practices. Fact
Nipples should be perky/straight to breastfeed Myth Fact
Women with any of these nipple types also can breastfeed. Use of simple tools like nipple puller or nipple shield to breastfeed. Fact
If mothers undergo a C-section, they cannot breastfeed immediately Myth Fact
Irrespective of the type of delivery, either Vaginal birth or C-section, all mothers can breastfeed. As soon as the placenta is delivered or removed from the mother’s body, hormonal changes prepare the mother’s body for breastfeeding. Fact

What is Latching ? Latching is putting the baby to the breast in the right position for breastfeeding and effective milk transfer

Apply hot compress on the breast with a towel dipped and squeezed in hot water to relax the muscles. Try to latch and breastfeed the baby on the engorged side first. If baby unable to latch, hand express as much to relieve discomfort (into a clean container for milk storage) then latch the baby directly. Engorgement occurs when the milk ducts get enlarged because of excess milk ,effective milk removal did not happen or mother forgot to switch sides.
Early initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour of baby’s delivery also called as the ‘Golden hour’. Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of baby’s life. Breastmilk should be the primary source of nutrition for the baby up to 1 year of age even after solids begin post 6 months. Continued breastfeeding up to 2 years of age or beyond.
