Breath test in medicine
Breath alcohol testing There are three major types of breath alcohol testing devices, and they're based on different principles: Uses a chemical reaction involving alcohol that produces a color change Detects alcohol by infrared (IR) spectroscopy Detects a chemical reaction of alcohol in a fuel cell
Using a fuel cell in the presence of a catalyst, oxygen in a sample of expired air converts any alcohol present into acetic acid and then to water and carbon dioxide. A fuel cell converts the chemical energy released when oxidation occurs into a detectable electrical voltage. The higher the voltage, the more alcohol is present in the sample
Color reaction a suspect breathes into the device. The breath sample is bubbled in one vial through the mixture A system of photocells connected to a meter to measure the color change associated with the chemical reaction
Breath analysis may offer a relatively inexpensive, rapid, and non-invasive method for detecting a variety of diseases
The Heartsbreath TM test is a non-invasive breath test for breath biomarkers that predict the probability of grade 3 rejection in heart transplant recipients . It employs a breath collection apparatus (BCA) for collection of volatile organic compounds in breath onto a sorbent trap and analyzed via gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy. It is approved by FDA
Biomarkers for breast cancer Breath mass ion biomarkers of breast cancer . Phillips M, Cataneo RN, Lebauer C, Mundada M, Saunders C. Journal of Breath Research (19 Dec. 2016)
