NARRATIVE REPORT
(Brigada Pagbasa Implementation)
Improving the existing school facilities is an important endeavor that every person involved in our educational system clearly adhere to. That is what the Brigada
Eskwela Implementers had in mind when they formulated the idea of volunteerism in order to assist the different schools nationwide to prepare for the opening of classes. All of
these activities as we all know are being done for the benefit of the learners.
This year another innovative and timely program was initiated aptly called Brigada Pagbasa. Like it’s predecessor the Brigada Eskwela, It also aims to help the learners in
preparation for the opening of classes albeit in a more direct approach because it deals with the most basic skill needed by the learners in order to the successful and that is
reading. We all know that reading is the foundation for learning.
Recognizing the value of reading teachers of Urdaneta I central School and Urdaneta City SPED Center lead by Dr. Salvacion G. Tabelin, the school principal came up with
various activities to further reading activities of the pupils. Parents and other stakeholders were also involved to facilitate the program and to ensure it’s success.
Worthwhile activities in reading such as Parent Tutoring, Peer Tutoring and Availability of Home Learning Space were adapted to help the learners with reading
difficulties and beginning readers. Stakeholders also provide reading materials to the school library as added tools to further bolster to the Brigada Pagbasa Program.
Teachers also went out of their ways and encouraged parents and their children to bond and read video presentation.Teachers even set-up a reading corner in their
classroom and posted it on Social Media, along with other activities of their pupils like poem recitation and reading short stories. Everyone’s active participation is an proof that
despite the pandemic, learning continues to thrive especially in the art of reading

The Local Government Unit (LGU) City library conducted “Book Giving Program” for the Grade 3 SSES students.
Schools and LGU are one unit and partnerships with all sectors are essential to help children reach their
maximum potential. LGU collaboration with schools complements and reinforces values, culture and the
learning opportunities that schools can provide for their students. In other words, all of us — teachers, staff
parents, nonprofit and the like — working together, truly make a difference in the lives of our students.
According to Allen and Daly, 2020
the benefits of parental
involvement extend beyond the
realm of literacy and educational
achievement. Sir Norman (Grade 6
adviser) is giving instruction to the
parents about the reading
materials they will receive

NARRATIVE REPORT ON BRIGADA PAGBASA
( Peer- Tutoring )
The Department of Education Brigada Eskwela program has been synonymous with volunteerism and unity. Over the past years since it was implemented
different sectors from our society have joined hands to create an atmosphere of unity and camaraderie in order to achieve a common goal and that is to provide a
healthy and conducive learning environment for our learners.
However with the onslaught of the pandemic that learning environment was adversely affected since face to face classes were cut-off, thereby changing the
educational landscape from personal to virtual. In order to cope up with the current situation innovations such as Peer Tutoring during reading activities were
implemented to help in alleviating the situations of learners who are experiencing difficulties in understanding their lessons.
Not one to be left behind teachers of Urdaneta I Central School and Urdaneta City Sped Center have successfully implemented this activity to their learners in
support of the Brigada Pagbasa aligned with the Brigada Eskwela program. This activity allows the learners to interact with each other as they enjoy the beauty of
reading. Pupils from different sections and grade levels of both UICS and UCSC with the guidance of their respective teachers have actively participated on this
worthwhile endeavour. Peer-tutoring has proven to be an effective tool in addressing the needs of learners who have difficulty in reading.

NARRATIVE REPORT ON BRIGADA PAGBASA
( Home Learning Spaces are Conducive to Learning )
Classrooms have always been seen as the traditional place for children to seek and discover knowledge but the situation during this pandemic has
drastically changed that perception. New normal classes today means that learners have to meet their teacher and classmates virtually and certain conditions have to
be met in order for a pupil to have a meaningful learning experience such as strong internet connection and a comfortable space in their own homes free from noise
and distraction. For those pupils without gadgets and do not have access to internet connectivity a conducive work and study place is indeed a must have for them.
Recognizing the importance of a good learning environment, the teachers of UICS and UCSC led by their dynamic school principal Dr. Salvacion G. Tabelin
have encouraged parents to set-up a conducive place for their children to study. The teachers have suggested different designs and set-up for the parents to make for
their child. These beautiful study corners were wonderfully shared by the parents through the pictures they have sent to the teachers as part of the Brigada Pagbasa
activity. The teachers and parents were truly committed in trying to give the best learning workplace for the learners.

NARRATIVE REPORT ON BRIGADA PAGBASA
( Parent Tutoring )
“ In loco parentis “ Latin for ‘ in the place of a parent ‘ is a phrase that have long been associated to teachers and rightfully so because they aptly fill that
description. We are known to be the second parent of our pupils whenever they are inside the school premises or inside the classrooms. This responsibility have
been wholeheartedly embraced by teachers as they perform their duties.
This pandemic however has allowed parents to have a first-hand experience on how to be a teacher to their own children. Because of the health and safety
protocols being implemented by the government, pupils have to conduct their classes in their own homes thus providing ample time for parents to guide them in
their study.
One of the most common scenario at home during a parent and child tutoring session is when a parent is teaching his/her child how to read. It is one of the
most poignant portrait of devotion and dedication that a parent shows to his/her child because it requires a lot of patience and skills to teach a child how to read. The
teachers of UICS and UCSC with the support of Dr. Salvacion G. Tabelin, school principal have provided modules and reading materials to the learners that they
can use during their online and modular classes. Videos and pictures of the parents with their child having a bonding moment while reading were sent to the
teachers of UICS/ UCSC as part of the BRIGADA PAGBASA activity.

NARRATIVE REPORT ON BRIGADA PAGBASA
( Participation of Learners )
While most of the activities of Brigada Eskwela seem to focus on the preparation and improvement of classrooms and other school facilities, it is a fact that
these are being done for the benefit of all the learners in a certain school. To give more focus on the learners’ needs to grow academically, Brigada Pagbasa was
launced this school year to give premium in developing a child’s love of reading.
Various activities such as parent tutoring, peer tutoring, improvement of home learning spaces and others were practiced to be able to provide the learners with
the much needed support to improve their reading skills. As advocates of the value of reading, teachers of UICS and UCSC through the leadership of Dr. Salvacion
G. Tabelin have worked together to assist both parents and pupils by providing reading materials and activities that aims to develop a child”s reading skills.
Every learner participated enthusiastically which makes Brigada Pagbasa a resounding success as shown in the different videos and pictures sent by the
parents. Everyone is looking forward to the next edition of Brigada Pagbasa next school year because a worthy endeavour really deserves an encore.
