About
Odisha
Magnificent architecture, history, dialects,
vibrant art, music and dance forms make
Odisha the ever-vibrant state of India.
Odisha (earlier known as Orissa), the
battlefield of the famous Kalinga War fought
by Ashoka the Great, is located on the
eastern coast of the country. When the sun
rises it rises over a land of temples built on
a solid foundation given by heritage. Be it
the temples of the capital Bhubaneswar, the
Buddhist Shanti Stupas of the Dhaulagiri
Hills or the exotic birds that can be seen in
Chilika Lake, Asia's largest saltwater lake, it
is all worth seeing.
The excellence and grandeur of Odisha's architecture is
displayed in its temples that were left behind by the Aryans.
The temples are some of the finest in the country. The most
important of these are the Lingaraj Temple, Bhubaneswar
(11th century), the Jagannath Temple of Puri (12th century)
and the great Sun Temple of Konark (13th century). And so,
the Golden Triangle of Odisha- Bhubaneswar, Konark and Puri
contribute the maximum to tourism goodwill. They are the
primary temples built in this style of 'Kalinga' architecture.
Art and Culture of Odisha
It is impossible to list every form of visual arts and crafts of t
highly talented state, but here are some of the most famous
sand art

music
Remember Sona Mohapatra's Coke Studio
track Rangabati? A remake of one of the
most popular songs produced by the state!
Odisha is primarily a land of tribes and each
tribe has its own distinct song and dance
style. Anyone delving into the vast pool of
elements that define Odisha's culture should
definitely take into account Odissi music
which forms an entire branch of music.
Odissi songs were written even before the
development of the Odia language. The
famous Odia poet Jayadeva first wrote the
songs and this game gave shape to Odissi
music. Very different from the ragas of
Hindustani and Carnatic music, Odissi ragas
are sung in drut taal (fast beats). The
classical dance of Odissi is performed with
this music.
dance
Originally performed by Devadasis,
Odissi dance is more closely
associated with temple culture than
any other existing dance form. It
traditionally depicts the divine love
between Lord Krishna and his
consort Radha, drawing inspiration
from the lyrical compositions of the
poet Jayadeva. The dance basically
consists of a mythological story,
symbolic costumes, abhinaya,
mudras, and is extremely beautiful.
Culture ofCulture of
PunjabPunjab
Punjabis are mainly divided into two communities: Khatris and Jats. They have been involved in agriculture for a long time. But
trade in commerce has also opened up in the state. A large population still follows the joint family system which has now becom
unique. The feeling of togetherness can be easily felt as they have promised to be with each other in moments of sorrow and
happiness. Punjabis are very particular about their traditions and relations. Every festival or ceremony has pre-defined rituals w
are strictly followed. Be it birth or marriage, hair cutting or funeral, following the rituals is a must which according to them
strengthens the relationship and promotes a proper social harmony.
Food in PunjabFood in Punjab
One of the favourite cuisines
of Indians and other
communities outside, Punjabi
food is full of flavour and
spices. The food here with
ghee on chapati is considered
for the strong hearted! Lassi
is the refreshing drink here
and is also known as the
welcome drink. It is a very
heavy drink made from milk,
especially for those who are
notfromNorthernIndia.
clothes in punjabclothes in punjab
The traditional clothes of Punjab are very colorful, unique
and vibrant. Women wear Salwar Kameez. These clothes
are beautifully designed and embroidered in many colors
at homes. Men wear turbans with great pride. Initially
Hindus and Muslims also used to wear turbans, but now
only 6 people can be seen wearing turbans. Kurta is worn
on the upper body, and Ahmed which is a baggy and
balloon-like pajama is worn on the lower part. The
preferred footwear is Jutti which is the traditional
footwear worn by men and women for many years.
k Dances of Punjab
k Dances of Punjab
There are many folk music and dances prevalent in Punjab and
the rest of the country. One of them is Bhangra which has
become quite popular in the western countries as well. This
dance style started many years ago when Punjabi farmers used
to dance to welcome the harvest season. Giddha and Sami,
Ludhi and Dhamal are some other popular dances from the
region. Punjabi music has also become popular in Bollywood.
Punjabi songs are known for their fun and frolic and music is an
essential part of it.
Language and
religion
The official language of the state is Punjabi, which is also the local language used for communication.
Although there is a single local language, there are many dialects that are used in different regions. Some
of the local dialects are Doabi, Ghebi, Malwai, Pahari, etc. Interestingly, the script of Punjabi languages is
Gurmukhi in India and Shammukhi in Pakistan. There are many religions in Punjab but the Indian state of
Punjab has a large population of Hindus and Sikhs. Khatris are the most prominent among Hindus,
Brahmins, Rajputs and Banias can also be found. The Sikh population in the state is particularly high due to
the origin of Sikhism. There are many Sikh religious centers in Punjab, not to forget the most famous
Golden Temple in Amritsar, where a huge amount of food comes from all over the world. Some of the
people of Indian Punjab are Muslims, Christians and Jains.
