CHAPTER 4: DEVELOPMENTAL
THEORIES AND OTHER RELEVANT
THEORIES
Sigmund Freud, a Viennese doctor,
believed that parents' handling of
children's sexual and aggressive desires
influenced their personalities and adult
well-adjustment. He identified five stages
of sexual development: Oral, Anal,
Phallic, Latency, and Genital.
Sigmund Freud

STAGES OF SEXUAL
DEVELOPMENT
ROLE OF CONFLICT
Psychosexual stages involve resolving conflicts that require
sexual energy expenditure. The more energy expended at a
stage, the more important characteristics remain as an
individual matures. Freud's analogy of military troops on a
march illustrates this concept. Successfully resolving conflicts
allows most troops to move on to the next stage, while greater
difficulty necessitates more troops (libido) to remain behind.

Some individuals struggle to transition between stages
due to inadequate needs or overindulgence. This can lead
to fixation, where a portion of an individual's libido is
permanently invested in a specific stage of development,
causing frustration or resistance to leave the
psychological benefits of that stage.
FRUSTRATION, OVERINDULGENCE, AND FIXATION

Oral Stage
Focuses on gratification through the mouth. It starts from infancy in the form of
thumb sucking or breastfeeding and can lead to fixation in adulthood with
behaviors such as nail biting, smoking, or excessive drinking.
The Sigmund Freud oral stage of development starts at birth and continues until a
child is about 18 months of age. At this age, children are fixated on their mouth as a
pleasure creating organ. They can satisfy their needs through objects such as their
mother's breast, their thumbs, or anything they can put in their mouth.

Anal Stage
The period in a child's psychosexual development during 1-3 yrs. old,
which the child's main concerns are with the processes of elimination.
The anal stage, generally the second and third years of life, is held to
be significant for the child's later development because the
acquisition of bowel control is presumed to be connected to other
forms of self-control, such as cleanliness and orderliness.

Phallic Stage
As the child becomes more interested in his genitals, and in the genitals of others,
conflict arhes.
The phallic stage of psychosexual development occurs from ages three to six. The
child develops an attraction to the parent of a different sex than them, which is
called the Oedipus Complex for boys and the Electra Complex for girls.

ELECTRA COMPLEX FOR GIRLS
The Electra complex is unsatisfactory for girls,
leading to penis envy and wish to be a boy. To
resolve this, they repress(to remove the
tension) their desire for a father and blame their
mother, repressing feelings and identifying with
her.
A psychoanalytic term used to describe a girl's
sense of competition with her mother for the
affection of her father.

OEDIPUS COMPLEX FOR BOYS
The Oedipus complex, a controversial Freudian
concept, is a crucial aspect of the phallic stage. It
stems from the Greek myth of Oedipus, who kills
his father and marries his mother. In a young boy,
the Oedipus complex arises due to his sexual
desires for his mother, leading to castration
anxiety. To resolve this, the boy imitates masculine
dad-type behaviors (identification)
adopting the values and attitudes of another
person, resulting in a male gender role and
superego.
It involves a boy, aged between 3 and 6, becoming
unconsciously sexually attached to his mother, and
hostile towards his father (who he views as a rival).

Latency Stage
From about six years to puberty, during which a child
apparently represses sexual urges and prefers to
associate with members of the same sex.No further
psychosexual development takes place during this
stage (latent means hidden). The libido is dormant.
Freud thought that most sexual impulses are
repressed during the latent stage, and sexual energy
can be sublimated (re: defense mechanisms) towards
school work, hobbies, and friendships.
Much of the child's energy is channeled into
developing new skills and acquiring new knowledge,
and play becomes largely confined to other children of
the same gender.

Genital Stage
The final stage of Freud's psychosexual
theory, when an individual begins to
have strong sexual interest in the
opposite sex and this sexual desires
starts at 20's. And, if the stage is
successful, this is when folks have
heterosexual intercourse and develop
loving, lifelong relationships with
someone of the opposite sex.
