Bryonia alba (also known as white bryony or wild hops ) is a vigorous vine in the family cucurbitaceae, found in Europe and Northen Iran. It has a growth habit similar to Kuduz, which give highly destructive potential outside it's native range as a noxious weed. Other common name includes False mandrake, English mandrake, wild vine, wild hops, wild nep, tanus, Ladies' seal and tettebury. Bottom line: All the parts of Bryonia alba contains bryonin which is poisonous and may cause illness and death. Livestock may also be poisonous by consuming the fruits and leaves. Forty berries constitutes a lethal dose for adult humans. Bryonia alba is one of the remedies in homeopathy which is especially useful in acute diseases.
Medicinal part of Bryonia alba- Roots The root of Bryonia alba is usually tintured to make mdicine and has traditionally been use for pleurisy pain , and other inflammatory conditions. It is used for joint pains and mucles aches , and also very useful in reducing inflammation, also used for treating Rheumatic fever, Rheumatic Arthritis and Typhoid. This herb is prescribed in low doses only and is toxic in high concentrations. Gastric distress is most common early sign of toxicity. Dosage(1:10): one drop in approximately 120 ml three times daily. Fact to be remember: Bryonia dioica (red bryony) has the same effect as Bryonia alba and may be substituted.

Highly irritable when they become ill and live a very clean life and are meticulous in their nature. At low doses , it can cause many side effects including dizziness, vomiting, convulsions, colic, bloody diarrhoea, abortion, nervousness, exictment and kidney damage. Larger doses may cause fatal poisoning . Just touching fresh Bryonia can cause skin irritation. Eating the berries can cause death , also it can irritate the stomach and intestine and can make gastro-intestinal problems worse. In all the mucous membranes of the body, there is dryness and lack of secretion. It affects blood in it's quantity, quality as well as circulation , increasing the flow and the power of heart's action.

Keynote/ Guiding symptoms of Bryonia alba All complaints are worst from motion. Along with Amelioration by absolute rest and pressure. All complaints develop slowly and incidious begginings. It is a very persistent remedy. Bryonia causes dryness of all the mucous membranes e.g.: lips, mouth, nose, respiratory tract, aliementary tract and thereby produces some of the most characteristic symptoms e.g.: DRY, HARD AND KNOTTY STOOL, DRY SPASMODIC COUGH, STITCHING PAIN, etc. Great thirst for large quantity of cold water at long intervals; great appetite and eats voraciously. Stitching pain runs through the whole of Bryonia which is relieve by absolute rest and prssure and lying on painful side. Desires for oysters, sweets, coffee, cold drink acids and sour drinks. Dropsical effusion into the serous, synovial membranes, resulting in pleurisy, Rhematic arthritis etc. Aversion: to milk, rich food, fatty and gresy food.
Most complaints aggrevate in summer and by heat; symptoms aggrevate after the meal. There is intolerance of vegetable food. Viracious mensturation, nose bleed when menses should appear, blood spitting or haemoptysis. Breasts are heavy, of a stony hardness, pale but hard hot and painful; must support them with hand to prevent less motion. Mind: The paitent is very morose and ill-humoured; exceedingly irritable and inclined to be angry. There is great anxiety and mental depression. Weakness of mind, as if he would faint.
Physical general symptoms of Bryonia alba Patient is irritable, has vertigo from raising from the head, pressive headache, dry parched lips, mouth, execessive thirst, bitter taste, sensitive epigastrium and feeling of a stone in the stomach, stools large, dry, hard; dry cough, rheumatic pains and swellings, dropsical effusions into the synovial and serous membrane. General modalities Aggrevation: From slightest MOTION, excretion, touch, warmth, warm food and drink, warm room and summer, suppressed discharges of any kind, at 9p.m. Amelioration: Complete rest, lying on painul side, pressure, cold, eating cold food and taking cold drink
Particulars Headache: Causation: Due to draught of cold air; from constipation, from ironing. Concomitants: Dry white coating of tongue and thirst for large quantity of water at long intervals. Character of pain: Bursting type, as if brain is going to burst with stitiching and sticking pain. Modalities: Aggrevation from motion in the morning, when first opening the eyes and relieved by pressure and lying on painful side.
Gastro-intestinal symptoms: Mouth: As there is great dryness of the mucous membrane of the whole alimentary canal, the lips are dry, parched and cracked. Dryness of the mouth is well-marked, with grat thirst for large quantity of cold water at long intervals. Stomach: There is pressure in the stomach, as if a stone is lying at the pit of stomach. Dyspepsia with soreness in stomach is often met with. There is nausea and faintness when rising up. Vomiting of bile immediately after eating, pain in the abdomen, aggrevated after food, not relieved by pressure. Most of the pain of Bryonia are relieved by pressure except gastric pain.
Constipation: Causation: As Bryonia causes dryness of mucous membrane of colon, it produces a very bad type of constipation. Sensation: No inclination or desire for stool. Character of stool: Stool is dry, hard knotty, as if burnt. Concomitants: Headache due to constipation, with dry tongue; and thirst for large quantity of cold water at long intervals.
Diarrhoea: Causation: After taking cold food and drinks (Puls, Arsenic, Argentum nit.) when the days are not hot and nights are cold, during the spell of hot weather. Time: Morning diarrhoea, as soon as the patient gets up from the bed and puts the feet on the floor. Character of stool: Dirty, watery stool, containing undigested food particles; very much acrid. Modalities: Aggrevation: From slightest motion. Amelioration: By complete rest. Concomitants: With dry tongue and great thirst for large quantity of cold water at long intervals.
Respiratory symptoms: Nose: Viracious menstruation, nose bleeds at the time of menses. If the menstrual flow is checked suddenly from cold, nose-bleed will appear. Dryness of nose with frequent sneezing and loss of smell. Cough: Causation: After taking cold or getting hot in summer; from exposure to draught of cold wind. Location: Right side of the chest is usually involved. Character of cough: Cough is dry, hard with gagging and vomiting with stitching pain in the chest. Modalities: Aggrevation: Cough is more towards night, from motion, when coughing, laughing, talking, from heat of room. Amelioration: Relieved by complete rest lying on the painful side. Concomitants: While coating of tongue with great thirst for large quantity of cold water at long intervals.
Pneumonia: Stage: In the early stage of pneumonia Bryonia is usually indicated. Location: Lower lobe of right lung is affected Sensation: There is stitching pain in the chest. While coughing, the patient holds the chest. There is frequent desire to take deep breath. Modalities: Aggrevation: From slightest motion entering a warm room, from deep inspiration. Amelioration: By complete rest, lying on painful side and pessure. Concomitants: Constipation dry tongue, great thirst and mental irritability.
Breast: Sensation: Mammae feels very heavy. Character: Stony hardness, very much hot and painful. Modalities: Aggrevation: By motion patient must support the breast with hand while coughing or moving. Amelioration: By absolute rest and pressure.
Fever: Bryonia is of great help in fevers of all kinds and even typhoid fever is controlled by this drug. Onset of the fever is slow and insidious. Causation: After taking cold in hot summer, weather, from exposure to the draught of cold wind, after taking cold when getting wam. Symptoms of fever: During fever, the patient lies very quitely on the bed; and does not to move; because a little bit of motion makes the patient worse. During fever there may be low muttering delirium. The patient talks about his daily business. Desire to get out of bed and go home, although he is at home. The patient says during delirious stage “I want to go home”.
Pulse is full, hard tense and quick. During fever there is profuse perspiration Along with fever, th cough becomes dry and hard with stitching pain in the chest. There is dry, hard and knotty stool, as it burnt. Modalities: Fever aggrevates after slightest motion and is relieved by absolute rest. In meningeal fever too, there is constant motion of left arm and leg with other generalities.
