Definition
•Buerger'sdiseaseisatypeofvasculitisinwhichthere

feet.Buerger'sdiseasealsocalledthromboangiitis
obliterans.

THE CAUSE OF BUERGER'S DISEASE
•Smokingandtheuseofchewingtobacco.
•Itistheorizedthattobaccotriggersanautoimmune
reaction,inwhichthebody'simmunesystemmistakes
healthytissuesaspotentiallydangerousinvadesinto
thebodyandattacksthem.
•Thiscausesinflammationandthedevelopmentofclots
inthearteriesandveinsofthehandsandfeetthatare
characteristicofBuerger'sdisease.
•Buerger'sdiseaseoccursmostofteninyoungadultmen
whoareheavycigarettesmokers.

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY
•Healthyarteriesandveinsarecriticaltosupplyingvital
oxygenandnutrientstocellsandtissuesandremoving
wasteproducts.
•Thiscirculationiskeytothehealthofthecellsand
tissuesofthehandsandfeet.
•Buerger'sdiseaseinterfereswithcirculationleadingto
ischemiaofcellsandtissues.
•Inischemia,cellsareunabletoreproducenormally
recovereffectivelyfrominjury,andfightinfection.

SYMPTOMS OF BUERGER'S DISEASE
•Pain in the hands and feet and the development of
sores or lesions that do not heal.
•If Buerger'sdisease is left untreated, gangrene
(tissue death) can occur.
•Intermittent leg pains

•Leg tingling
•Leg burning
•Leg paresthesias

otherdiseasesandconditions,suchasRaynaud's
phenomenonandothertypesofvasculitis.

•Atestcalledanangiogrammaybeperformedtoassistin
diagnosisofBuerger'sdisease.
•Anangiogramisanimagingtestthatcreatesapictureofthe
arteriesandcanrevealthearterydamageandblockagesin
thehandsandfeetthataretypicalofBuerger'sdisease.

•Buerger'sdiseasecanoftenbesuccessfullytreated
beforethedevelopmentofcomplications.
