Building a path to the top in OutSystems A personal journey Nuno Reis OutSystems MVP
3 What we will be talking about My Background Pain Points Mentorship Tips and Tricks Q&A
Background 4
5 Computer Science Major 2005: Internship about ITIL, development in JSP/XML/Flash Some web development in ColdFusion, some SQL Server Reporting Pages Where did I came from
6 Then 2008 and a global crisis Started to do EDI (Biztalk and XSLT) and .NET 2.0 Where did I came from
7 I was doing Web Development. I was dragging lines and placing squares on them. Obviously, I was the person to drag lines and place orange circles on them to to web applications. Then 2011 came And so I did.
Pain Points 8
Team of 1 No supervision No support No validation No best practices Learn from my (many) mistakes Never big enough to do good projects 9
The Change (1) 2016: Joined the MVP Program 2017: left the company 2018: started my own business and relearned OutSystems and best practices 10
Alone in the area 11 What am I supposed to do? Who can I compare myself with? Who can I talk to? This is be important later.
Feeling as a Champion, not an MVP I was doing things that worked, not doing things right. I was passionate about the platform, not someone who could use it well. By getting big projects I was finally challenged. By training others, I was forced to study and to be able to justify. Was also exposed to new questions. 12
Understanding/Explaining "A mathematical theory is not to be considered complete until you have made it so clear that you can explain it to the first man whom you meet on the street." 13
2020 changed everything (2) I was leading my third team; Covid; OutSystems started to hand out vouchers (9k) and the forum was invaded by thousands of students. I rose to #1 in the Forum for an entire month. End of my Impostor Syndrome. I was good at every entry level question. 14
Mentorship 15
2022 changed everything (3) I started to teach… and was terrible at it. So again, I reinvented myself. The entire class (13) got certified! And I helped them to find jobs. 16
On the same year… As Raparigas do Código Switched from teaching to mentoring, to a mix of both and something else. 17
And Hackathons! 18
Tips and Tricks 19
20 There is a thin line between Purpose and Obsession. I jump between Forum, Ideas, Forge, Mentoring, User Groups, so I don't get "addicted". It is all OutSystems, but it is not one specific thing. Find your Purpose
21 Don't mind switching teams/companies/projects. Look for what is best for you. Find your Place
22 You can't help them all. Do your best, but learn when to let go. For the Mentors Students Got a job Good employee Great MVP
23 I don't see a career in OS like others in IT. But you will always choose between: Web or Mobile BackEnd or FrontEnd People or Tech Career
24 People or Tech Career
25 We are all different. What I say is working for me. May not work for you. Always keep learning. Final tips
