BUNCHY TOP OF BANANA
INTRODUCTION
It is a viral disease. Most serious diseases of banana.
The infected plant has a rosette like bunch of leaves at the apex.
This disease was first reported in fiji Island.
In India it is common in Karnataka, AP, Orissa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu etc.
In Tamil Nadu, it is most prevalent in Viruppatchi, a hill station in
Didigul.
HOST PLANT: Musa paradisiyaka
CAUSAL ORGANISMS or PATHOGEN
Bunchy top Virus or Banana Virus –I or Musa Virus –I
This virus is isometric, 18-22 nm, circular,
Simple stranded DNA,
Vector of this virus is Insect..
BBTV is the sole member of the genusBabuvirusin the family
Nanoviridae [Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV)]
SYMPTOMS
Musa virus affect banana plant at any stage
Leaves become bunched together at the apex to form rosette.
Appearance of irregular, brown streaks along the secondary vein is the
first symptoms.
Brown streak also appear on petiole.
Leaf become smaller and narrow.
Leaves are clustered.
Infected plant shows dwarf shoots.
Fruits are not Produced.
Finally become decay.

CONTROL MEASURES:
The affected plants should be pull out and destroyed by burning.
The infected plants should be killed by pouring of kerosene over each plants.
Virus particle can be killed by spraying herbicides such as Agrokone or
MCPA or 24D (24D -2,4 –Dichlorophenoxy Acetic Acid) ,
(MCPA –2-Methyl –1-4 Chlorophenoxy Acetic Acid)
Disease free suckers or certified virus free tubers should be used for Planting.
Strict control on the entry of banana plants from other or inside states
must be checked for infection.
TN Government has banned the cultivation of Viruppatchi banana (Malaivazhai)
Moreover TN Government also followed the infection check for
movement of banana from Other states.
