Carbon and its
compound-1

Introduction to carbon :

Ques. Why there are large no. of carbon compounds?
•Carbon is tetravalent & hence can form 4 bonds.
•Carbon show property of catenation.
[property of self image]

•Allotropes of carbon
Different physical forms of any element are called allotropes of
that elements.
Allotropes of carbon:
1)Diamond 2) Graphite
•Diamond
1. Each carbon is bonded with 4 other carbons.
2. Network structure is formed & hence these type of molecules
are called giant molecules.

3. Very hard in nature.
4. Bad conductor of electricity.
5. Lustrous in nature.

•Graphite :
1. Each carbon is bonded with 3 other carbon to
form hexagonal ring layer.
2. Each layer have week force of attraction.
3. Good conductor of electricity.
4. Black/ dull / non lustrous.

Uses of diamond Uses of Graphite
1. Jewellery 1. Electrodes
2. As abrasive 2. Cell/battery
3. Eye surgery 3. Lubricant
4. Drilling 4. Pencil

Covalent bond:
A type of chemical bond in which two atoms share pair(s) of
electrons.

•Types of covalent bond:
Single covalent bond:-
When two atoms share 1 pair of electrons.
•Double covalent bond:-
When 2 pairs of electrons are shared.

•Triplet covalent bond :-
When 3 pairs of electrons are shared.
Note :Two atoms can never from 4 covalent bond with each
other.
