•TheCovid-19pandemicunderscorestheurgentneedtostrengthenthe
globalhealthworkforce.Anewreport,TheStateoftheWorld’sNursing
2020,providesanin-depthlookatthelargestcomponentofthehealth
workforce.Findingsidentifyimportantgapsinthenursingworkforceand
priorityareasforinvestmentinnursingeducation,jobs,andleadershipto
strengthennursingaroundtheworldandimprovehealthforall.
•Nursesaccountformorethanhalfofalltheworld’shealthworkers,
providingvitalservicesthroughoutthehealthsystem.Historically,aswell
astoday,nursesareattheforefrontoffightingepidemicsandpandemics
thatthreatenhealthacrosstheglobe.Aroundtheworldtheyare
demonstratingtheircompassion,braveryandcourageastheyrespondtothe
COVID-19pandemic:neverbeforehastheirvaluebeenmoreclearly
demonstrated.

•Nursingnumbersincreasedby4.7million.Butthisstillleavesaglobal
shortfallof5.9million-withthegreatestgapsfoundincountriesin
Africa,SouthEastAsiaandtheWHOEasternMediterraneanregionas
wellassomepartsofLatinAmerica.

•Revealingly,morethan80percentoftheworld’snursesworkin
countriesthatarehometohalfoftheworld’spopulation.Andonein
everyeightnursespracticesinacountryotherthantheonewherethey
werebornortrained.Ageingalsothreatensthenursingworkforce:one
outofsixoftheworld’snursesareexpectedtoretireinthenext10
years.
•Toaverttheglobalshortage,thereportestimatesthatcountries
experiencingshortagesneedtoincreasethetotalnumberofnurse
graduatesbyonaverage8%peryear,alongwithimprovedabilityto
beemployedandretainedinthehealthsystem.Thiswouldcost
roughlyUSD10percapita(population)peryear.
