Ayurvedic Herbs playing crucial role in Acute Kidney Injury management Dr.Raghavendra Y BAMS, MD, (PhD) HOD&CMO PATANJALI WELLNESS HUBBALLI

Introduction Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a condition of abrupt reduction of renal functioning during a short period of time i.e. in terms of days or weeks. The changes in the renal functioning include a significant reduction in the glomerular filtration rate that ultimately increases the serum concentration of urea nitrogen and creatinine and proteinuria.[1] It has globally high rates of morbidity and mortality.[2] In developed and developing countries, the AKI characteristics vary due to variation in socioeconomic patterns, government health expenditures, infrastructure of health services and etiology of AKI.[3] But the cases of AKI are encountered mostly from the rural areas where people are prone to infectious diseases and animal venoms with poor obstetric care.[4]

Cont.. In Ayurveda, a term Vrikka is used to denote kidney which is considered as the site of origin ( Moolsthana ) of channels through which nutrition to the adipose tissue is transported ( Medovaha Srotas ). Kidney disorders are related with Mutraroga . [5,6] There are various evidences of effective management of such diseases in Ayurveda. Ayurveda  has given prime importance to  Mutravaha srotas  (urinary system) and  Srotogata Vikaras  (urinary disorders). Being a system responsible for homeostasis of fluids in the body it also detoxifies the body by eliminating certain waste products through urine. Mutravaha   srotas ailments, they can be grouped as  Mutrasangrahaneeya dravyas ,  Mutravirajaneeya dravyas ,  Mutravirechaneeya dravyas ,  Ashmarighna dravyas ,  Pramehagna dravyas ,

Case Report- 1 35 year old male visited KLE Belgaum hospital for increased blood pressure and diagnosed with AOCKD, ACUTE SECONDERY TO NSAID, CHRONIC SECONDERY TO RIGHT FUNCTIONING KIDNEY HTN. From 26/01/2025 under went dialysis twice a week. Started our oral medications since 22/02/2025

Mutrasangrahaneeya dravyas “ Ati pravrttam mutram yat sangrhnaati tat mutrasangrahneeyanam ”[ 7 ] These  dravyas  cause stoppage of excess  mutrapravritti  rather than altering the normal quantity, Ketaki  ( Pandanus odoratissimus Linn. F .),  Yashti  ( Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn .),   Yava  ( Hordeum vulgare Linn .)

Mutravirechaneeya dravyas “Yat dravyam mutrasya atipravartanam karoti tat mutravirechaneeyam ”[ 8 ] The  dravyas  causing increased urinary output are utilized in the management of  Mutrakrichra ,  Mutraghata , and the like.  Trinapanchamoola  and  Mutravirechaneeya dashemani  of  Charaka  are considered to be the best diuretics.  Ikshu  ( Saccharum officinarum Linn ), Gokshura  ( Tribulus terrestris Linn .) Shali (Oryza sativa Linn.), Ksheera (Milk),

Mutravirajaneeya Dravyas “Dosha dushtam mutram viranjayitva prakrtauv sthapayati tad mutravirajaneeyam ”[ 9 ] Dravyas , which reduce the  dosha dushti  and bring about normal  varna  to  mutra , are known as  Mutravirajaneeya dravyas . Haridra  ( Curcuma longa Linn .),  Chitraka  ( Plumbago zeylanica Linn .)

Ashmarighna Dravyas Ashmari  in  Ayurveda  refers to urolithiasis; and the herbs that break the formed stones, expel it from the body, and prevent further formation of stones are known as  Ashmarighna dravyas .  Dravyas  of  Veeratarvadi gana  and  Laghu panchamoola  serve this purpose.   Pashanabheda  ( Bergenia ciliata   Sternb .), Kulattha ( Dolichos biflorus  Linn.),  Shigru mula  (Roots of  Moringa olifera  Lam.),   Varuna  ( Crataeva nurvala  Buch-Ham.),   Gorakshaganjja  ( Aerva lanata  L.)

CONCLUSION "The condition showed significant improvement with the use of Ayurvedic medicines, effectively managing the symptoms. However, cases like these require regular follow-up and consistent medication until the serum creatinine levels return to the normal range. Ongoing monitoring is essential to ensure sustained recovery and prevent further complications."
