Casteism is the extreme caste or subcaste loyalty in the most irrational form. It completely undermines the interests of other caste or sub caste groups. Casteism ignores human values and social welfare. Casteism contrasts with the aim of bringing about a casteless society. Hence, it is anti-democratic. CAUSES OF CASTEISM CAUSES OF CASTEISM i . Endogamous Nature of the Caste : Members of a caste or sub-caste has to marry within his or her own caste or sub-caste. This practice of endogamy makes the people narrow-minded. ii. Strong Desire to Enhance Caste Prestige : Every member thus tries his level best to see that his caste prestige is safeguarded and enhanced .
iii. Advancement of Technology Advancement that has taken place in the field of transport and communication has helped the members of the caste to be in touch with one another regularly. iv. Urbanisation /Migration When the rural people go to the cities they naturally search for their nearer and dearer ones on the basis of the caste v. Powerful Hold of the Caste Over the Members : Caste is a strong cohesive group. It has a powerful hold over its members. CAUSES OF CASTEISM
CONSEQUENCES OF CASTEISM Casteism divides people in the name of caste and encourages intolerance, jealousy, rivalry and conflicts among members of the caste. CONSEQUENCES OF CASTEISM Caste and democracy cannot go together. Caste is based on inequality, whereas democracy assures equality and equal opportunities to one and all. Democracy and caste system are co-existing in India clashes between them are inevitable. Indian politics has become very much complicated because of the caste inference. (ii) Dangerous to Democracy
iii. Encourages Moral Degeneration : Casteism contributes to the moral fall. It encourages nepotism. It makes one go out of the way to help and favor people of one’s own caste. iv. Casteism leads to the Negligence of Talents and Efficiency : If candidates are selected and appointments are made on the basis of caste, it definitely damages talents, abilities and efficiencies of the people.
