Focus : Getting the Main Idea that is Explicit OBJECTIVES : At the end of the session in reading literacy class, the learner should be able to do the following with 80% accuracy and mastery: Read texts with comprehension; and Identify the main idea that is explicit in the text.

Hello again, Grade 7 Reader! You are about to go through another learning adventure – that of rediscovering a very important reading skill called “Getting the Main Idea that is Explicit.” This is not a new skill. In fact, you must remember having taken this up in your previous lesson titled “Citing Evidence to Support the General Statement.” Let’s find out how much you remember of your past lesson on this skill. Try out the following exercises.

PRE-READING Activity 1. Classify the small ideas in the box under the big ideas in the chart below. (In any order) ipil-ipil boat Batangas cousin jeepney Bacolod arms calesa head mother neck coconut acacia mangrove narra airplane Cebu legs Palawan ship sister uncle Pampanga hands father

relatives transportation body parts trees Philippine Provinces 1. 6. 11. 16. 21. 2. 7. 12. 17. 22. 3. 8. 13. 18. 23. 4. 9. 14. 19. 24. 5. 10. 15. 20. 25. sister uncle cousin mother father airplane boat calesa jeepney ship neck arms legs head hands ipil-ipil coconut acacia mangrove narra Bacolod Cebu Batangas Pampanga Palawan

Activity 2. Study the words inside the box very carefully then do the following: 1. Find the big idea and write it on the first line. 2. find the three small ideas and write them on the lines beside the roman numerals. 3. Then find the smaller ideas of each small idea and write them beside the letters under the small idea .

Activity 3. Study the ideas inside the box and determine which ones are big ideas and which ones are small ideas. Then, classify them accordingly by filling out the graphic organizers that follow. Planets Mars Jupiter E arth Venus Flowers Sampaguita Rose Gumamela Ilang-Ilang

Activity 4. Read the following sentences inside the boxes and put a check mark on the line before the main idea.

LEARNING POINT So, what exactly is the main idea? The main idea tells what the paragraph is all about. Every paragraph has a main idea. The main idea is either explicit which means it is stated in the paragraph, or implied which means it i s not stated but merely inferred. The main idea is usually the first or the last sentence of the paragraph. But there are also times when the main idea is found in the middle of the paragraph. The rest of the sentences in the paragraph are called supporting details . They give additional information about the main idea.

DURING READING Activity 5. Read the following selection. As you read, identify the main idea of the entire selection. Then, identify the main idea of each paragraph. Also, do refer to the box at the end of the selection to acquaint yourself with the meaning of underlined words in the selection.

Mount Apo is the highest mountain in the Philippines and one of the most challenging to climb. Rising to 3,143 meters above sea level, the mountain encompasses the provinces across Northern and Southern Mindanao. The demanding trail to the summit leads you through fields of boulders , jagged peaks, and a large crater with unearthly sulphur pillars. Towering the northeastern skyline between Baguio and Ambuklao with a majestic height of 2,934 meters above sea level, is Mount Pulag . Touted by mountaineering enthusiasts as one of the mightiest to conquer, Mount Pulag is the second highest mountain in the country. Mount Halcon is located in Baco , Oriental Mindoro and is home to the rare local water buffalo, the tamaraw. Dominating the skyline at 2,829 meters above sea level, Mount Halcon is filled with rocky terrain, steep slopes and unpredictable weather. The country’s third highest mountain, Mt. Halcon is one of the most challenging to scale even for experienced mountaineers.

WORD BANK to enclose within a circle; surround a large rock, typically one that has been worn smooth by erosion announced; to praise or publicize excessively a person who is very interested in a particular activity or subject sharp; extremely high Encompasses – Boulders – Touted – Enthusiasts – Steep –

POST READING Activity 6. Did you understand the selection? Now, Answer the following questions. Choose your answers from the box below. c d a b

Activity 7. Recall your answers to Activity 6. Using the graphic organizer below, write your answers to the questions regarding the selection you read.

Activity 8 . Read each paragraph carefully. Then, identify the main idea. 1. Plants cannot move, but their seeds can move from one place to another. Some seeds are blown by the wind while others are carried by water from the rain. Some seeds even stick to the fur of animals or on people’s clothes. That is how they move from place to place. But there are other important uses of plants. Some plants are a source of fibers for clothing materials. Plant materials are also used for making shelter. Some have medicinal value while others are sources of fuel.   a. Plants give off oxygen. b. Plants are sources of fuel. c. Plants have many important uses. d. Some plants are a source of fibers.

3 . Some plants like roses, have thorns. So, they cannot easily be touched. Some plants make you sneeze and cough. Others have hairs that make the skin itchy. 4. Animals move to different places at particular time of the year. They move to warmer place or to an area where there is more food. This is called migration. The movement of animals to a place where it is easier or safer for them to live called migration. Some animals such as the eel and the turtle, migrate to a particular region to lay their eggs. Others like the caribou of North America migrate north during the warm season and then, return to south to breed when the cold season comes. a. Animals move to different places at particular time of the year. b. They move to warmer place or to an area where there is more food. c. 5. Mammals are warm-blooded, and are able to maintain their body temperature no matter how hot or cold it gets. That is why mammals like polar bears, can live at the North Pole where there is cold climate all-year round, while others, such as camels can live deserts where it is very hot and dry. Land is the habitat of most mammals, but whales and dolphins live in the ocean, while bats can fly. The truth is, mammals can be found virtually everywhere – in the land, in the water, and in the air.   a. Land is the habitat of most mammals. b. Mammals are warm-blooded, and are able to maintain their body temperature. c. Mammals can be found virtually everywhere – in the land, in the water, and in the air. d. Mammals like polar bears, can live at the North Pole where there is cold climate all-year round.
