I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY SPIRIT 136. What does the Church mean when she confesses: “I believe in the Holy Spirit”? 683-686   To believe in the Holy Spirit is to profess faith in the Third Person of the Most Holy Trinity who proceeds from the Father and the Son and “is worshipped and glorified with the Father and the Son”. The Spirit is “sent into our hearts” ( Galatians  4:6) so that we might receive new life as sons of God. Introduction The Christian is a Temple of the Holy Spirit. From the very moment of baptism he is in our soul in grace, sanctifying it and adorning it with his gifts. If we do not cast him out because of mortal sin, he inspires and assists us, guiding us to heaven. This is the great gift of Jesus Christ when He ascends to heaven: "It is expedient for you that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Paraclete (the Holy Spirit) will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send him to you" (John 16:7). ANDREA DA FIRENZE Descent of the Holy Spirit 1365-68 Fresco Cappella Spagnuolo, Santa Maria Novella, Florence

MAIN IDEAS: 1. The Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Blessed Trinity 2 . God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit carry out salvation 3 . The Holy Spirit sanctifies us The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Blessed Trinity and we profess his divinity when we pray in the Creed: "I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son receives one worship and glory. We must therefore believe in God the Holy Spirit. We know that Jesus Christ, the second person of the Blessed Trinity, became man and died for us. By his life, death and resurrection, we men have been saved. But in our salvation the three divine Persons intervene: the Father, who sent his Son; the Son, who died for us; the Holy Spirit, who came on the day of Pentecost to be like the soul of the Church and to dwell in each one of us. WIT, Jacob de Trinity on earth & Trinity in heaven, 1726 Amstelkring Museum, Amsterdam We have said that there is only one God; therefore, all things that God does are done by the three divine Persons. However, some things are attributed to the Father, others to the Son, and others to the Holy Spirit . To the Holy Spirit, who proceeds from the love of the Father and the Son, is particularly appropriated the sanctification of men, although sanctification is the work of the whole Trinity.

4 . The Holy Spirit and the Church 5 . The Spirit sanctifies principally thru the Sacraments On the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and disciples, who were gathered in the Cenacle with the Blessed Virgin. With the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Church was opened to the nations. The Holy Spirit, which Christ pours out upon his members, builds, animates and sanctifies his Church. The sanctification that the Holy Spirit works in us consists in uniting us more and more with God; but, in order to achieve this, we must allow him to act in our soul. Living always in the grace of God . Receiving the sacraments, especially Penance and the Eucharist . Listening to what He tells us through the Pastors of the Church and interior inspirations. 6 . We have to deal with the Holy Spirit We know that the Holy Spirit is the "sweet guest of the soul" who is within us when we live in grace . We must ask the Holy Spirit in a special way for his seven gifts, which are necessary to truly live as Christians : The gift of wisdom . The gift of understanding . The gift of counsel . The gift of fortitude . The gift of knowledge . The gift of piety . The gift of fear of the Lord . BERNINI, Gian Lorenzo Chair of St Peter [detail] 1657-66 St Peter’s Basilica, Roma

RESOLUTIONS: 7 . Some prayers addressed to the Holy Spirit "Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit .“ " In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit ". " Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love .“ " Come, Holy Spirit, and send down from heaven a ray of your light." Come, O Holy Spirit! Enlighten my mind to know your commands; strengthen my heart against the snares of the enemy; inflame my will… I have heard your voice, and I don’t want to harden myself and resist, saying “Later…, tomorrow.” Nunc coepi ! Now I begin! In case there is no tomorrow for me. O Spirit of truth and wisdom, Spirit of understanding and counsel, Spirit of joy and peace! I want whatever you want. I want because you want, I want however you want, I want whenever you want . --St. Josemaria Consider that, when one is in a state of grace, the Holy Spirit dwells in the soul as in a temple; make a resolution to live always in the grace of God . Repeat , especially around the feast of Pentecost, some of the prayers addressed to the Holy Spirit. SAMACCHINI, Orazio Allegory of Wisdom Private collection
