What is sea level rise? It is a rise or an increase in global mean sea level as a result of an increase in the volume of water in the world’s oceans.
CAUSES OF SEA LEVEL RISE
Ocean warming (thermal expansion) Melting glaciers & ice sheets Decline in water storage on land
1. OCEAN WARMING (THERMAL EXPANSION) The warming of earth is primarily due to accumulation of heat-trapping greenhouse gases and more than 90 percent of this trapped heat is absorb by the oceans. As this heat is absorb , ocean temperatures rise and water expands. This thermal expansion contributes to an increase in global sea level.
2. Glaciers and Ice Sheets are Melting In the 20th century, sea levels rose about 4-6 inches (11-16 cm), and this is speeding up. By 2020, sea levels were rising more than twice as quickly as before 1990.
Today, the Greenland Ice Sheet is melting more quickly than Antarctica, and it is one of the major sources of global sea level rise. As Antarctica continues to warm up, this is likely to change, with Antarctic meltwater making a larger contribution to rising sea levels.
3. Liquid Water on Land is Declining and Shifting to Oceans Human activities and climate change have an impact on the water cycle , which directly affects the amount of water not only in the oceans but also on land, such as in lakes, rivers, groundwaters, and reservoirs.
Rain gets held up in the water bodies and soil on its journey back to the ocean, which is referred to as ‘land water storage’. Humans speed up this cycle by continuously extracting water from the ground and wetlands , which eventually ends up in the oceans.
TYPE OF SEA LEVEL CHANGES
A. Eustatic sea level change Refers to changes in the global sea level itself. Caused by a variety of factors, including changes in the volume of water in the oceans, changes in the shape and size of ocean basins, and changes in the Earth’s gravitational field.
B. Isostatic sea level change Refers to changes in the elevation of the land relative to the sea level. This can occur due to geological or tectonic processes such as the uplift or subsidence of land masses.
“ Among other causes it is clearly understood that HUMAN is the primary causes of any changes in our planet Earth “.
