About This Presentation

(sel) In biology, the smallest unit that can live on its own and that makes up all living organisms and the tissues of the body. A cell has three main parts: the cell membrane, the nucleus, and the cytoplasm. The cell membrane surrounds the cell and controls the substances that go into and out of th...

CELLS: THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF LIFE

CELL The cell was first identified by Robert Hooke in 1665 when he saw a box-like structure in a plant cork cell. PROKARYOTIC CELL Primitive cell It has no true nucleus and could not produce its own food, so it is called heterotroph . Bacteria and cyanobacteria belong to this group. EUKARYOTIC CELL Has a nucleus and other organelles. Plants, animals, and fungi are classified to this group. As the cell evolved, it went through many changes until it gave rise to eukaryotic cell. CELLS CAN BE CLASSIFIED AS:

Cell Structure The cell theory states that all living things are composed of cells. Living things come from existing cells, which can be single celled or multicellular. THERE ARE THREE OBSERVABLE PARTS OF A CELL The PLASMA MEMBRANE or also known as CELL MEMBRANE . Both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells have plasma membrane. It is semi – permeable membrane that allows the entrance and exit of nutrients within the cell. The CYTOPLASM. It is a gel-like substance that serves as the foundation of the cell. It is where the organelles are found. The NUCLEUS. It controls the activity of the cell. In prokaryotes, there is a clear nuclear area, which is not enclosed in a nuclear envelop while prokaryotes have a membrane nucleus in a cytoplasm. It contains deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which plays an important role during cell production.
