Cephalochordata Subphylum of chordata. Cephalo means “head” Chordata means “notochord” Habitat : Marine Deep sea water Species: 45 species are present

Characteristics of cephalochordates Cephalochordates are small tad pole like animals . Elongate ,latterally flattened Notochord is present They show locomotion through muscles Pharyngeal slits are present. Endostyle is present for digestion. Coelom is reduced in them . Dioecious External fertilization

REPRODUCTION OF CEPHALOCHORDATA Cephalochordates exhibit a unique life cycle and reproductive strategy. cephalochordates are dioecious . Sexually reproduce Asexual reproduction does not occur. External fertilization occur in them.

SEXUAL REPRODUCTION Cephalochordates are reproduced sexually. Separate sexes are present gonochoric

Fertillization External fertilization occur in them. Gametes are released outside of the body. Gametes released through atriopore. Male release sperms in surrounding water Female release eggs in water. Eggs and sperms unite to form zygote

Larval stage After fertilization zygote convert into free swimming larvae. Larvae known as leptochephalus . Larvae posses characterstics of chordates Notochord Gill slits Dorsal nerve cord

Metamorphosis Larvae undergo metamorphosis process It settle down on substrate Then it undergoes morphological changes. And larvae transfer into adult form.

Life cycle of cephalochordata
