Ch-8-Body Movements Introduction Human body movements Joints Ball & Socket joint Hinge joint Pivotal joint Fixed joint Skeletal System Bones Cartilage Muscles Movement in Earthworm Snail Cockroach Fish Birds Snake

Introduction Every action requires movement

What is a movement or locomotion? Movement- changing posture Locomotion- Movement causing change of place of the entire organism

Rotate bend

Two parts of our body seemed to be joined together- called JOINTS Touch your head, face fingers, ear etc . Hard part is called BONE HOW DO WE BEND BONES THEN?

Joint 1. Ball and socket joint Ball like surface of one rounded bone is joined into cup like depression of another bone Socket- is a fluid filled cavity allows movements Allows movement in all directions Examples- Hip or pelvis and shoulder

2. Pivotal joint A cylinder shaped bone rotates inside another bone that forms a ring around it A cylindrical bone rotates in a ring Allows only rotary movement

3. Hinge joint Bones can move only along one axis to bend/ extend or allows movement in one plane Allows back and forth movement femur tibia Knee cap

Examples of hinge joint Elbow knee Ankle

4.Fibrous/Fixed joint Do not allow any movement Found in cranium, upper jaw

Cartilaginous joint Limited movements are allowed Bones are joined with cartilage Found in vertebral column

Human Skeletal System It gives a framework to our body Framework is called skeleton X-ray image

Rib cage Joins the chest and the back bone thus forming a rib cage Some of the internal parts of the body lie protected inside it Skull is made up of many bones joined together Encloses and protects the brain

Backbone Made of many small bones Rib cage is joined to these bones Helps to bend back and forth Pelvic bone Below the stomach Part we sit on

Touch your ears Cartilage - is not as hard as bones and can be bent Muscles work in pair. One pair contracts to pull the bone while other relaxes.to pull the bone in opposite direction, the relaxed muscle contracts to pull the bone towards its original position. Muscle can only pull it can not push

Gait of animals 1. Earthworm Reddish brown terrestrial invertebrate – Vertebral column absent Also known as “Farmers friend” Invertebrate Do not have vertebrate column
