Chapter 1: Introduction to Heritage Tourism
What is Heritage? According to UNESCO, HERITAGE is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Full range of inherited traditions, monuments, objects, cultures, contemporary activities, meanings, and behaviors . A property/possession that is may be inherited
What is Culture? Refers broadly to the social heritage of a group (organized community or society). It is a pattern of responses discovered, developed, or invented during the group’s history of handling problems that arise from interactions among its members and between them and their environment. The way of life, especially the general customs and beliefs, of a particular group of people at a particular time.
What is Heritage Tourism? A branch of tourism oriented towards the cultural heritage of the location where tourism is occurring. It pertains to travelling to experience the places, artifacts , and activities that authentically represent the stories and people of the past. It can include cultural, historic, and natural resources. Also called “Diaspora tourism”
Intangible VS Tangible
The "intangible cultural heritage" means the practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills – as well as the instruments, objects, artifacts and cultural spaces associated therewith – that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognize as part of their cultural heritage. This intangible cultural heritage, transmitted from generation to generation, is constantly recreated by communities and groups in response to their environment, their interaction with nature and their history, and provides them with a sense of identity and continuity, thus promoting respect for cultural diversity and human creativity.
Oral traditions and expressions, including language as a vehicle of the intangible cultural heritage; (b) performing arts; (c) social practices, rituals and festive events; (d) knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe; (e) traditional craftsmanship
Tangible heritage includes buildings and historic places, monuments, artefact, etc., which are considered worthy of preservation for the future. These include objects significant to the archaeology, architecture, science or technology of a specific culture. Objects are important to the study of human history because they provide a concrete basis for ideas, and can validate them. Their preservation demonstrates recognition of the necessity of the past and of the things that tell its story2. Tangible cultural heritage has a physical presence
What is the IMPORTANCE of Heritage?
Our heritage provides clues to our past and how our society has evolved. It helps us examine our history and traditions and enables us develop an awareness about ourselves. It helps us understand and explain why we are the way we are. Heritage is a keystone of our culture that plays an important role in our politics, society, business and world view. It informs, influences and inspires public debate and policy both directly and indirectly.
