Learning Objectives
Must Learn (Basic Understanding) :- The concept of
how to judge business success
Should Learn (Grade C):- Analyse which factors are
important when judging business success.
Could Learn (Grade B/A):- Evaluate why measuring
success is important for businesses.

Measuring Success
•The success of a business can be judged in
different ways. The main approaches are: -
•Profit
•Size
•Product Quality
•Social Reasonability
•Consumer Satisfaction

The importance of targets
when judging success (Private
Sector)
•Businesses set objectives, they wish to achieve.
These objectives are then used to measure
success, if they achieve them or not.

Judging success in the Public
Sector
•These businesses also use objectives but of a
different kind to the private sector. This is because
they are not profit driven. Government usually
focus on quality and efficiency of goods and
services provided.

Business Failure
•It is not uncommon to business to fail. There
could be any number of reasons, some are
highlighted below: -
•Not having the right skills to run a business
•Business run out of finance – capital / investments etc.
•Businesses are not making enough sales.
•Going into administrations or liquidation.
