What is a MOTHERBOARD? A motherboard is the main printed circuit board (PCB) in a computer. The motherboard is a computer's central communications backbone connectivity point, through which all components and external peripherals connect.

TYPICAL MOTHERBOARD CONFIGURATION

PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD CPU SOCKET - or CPU slot contains one or more mechanical components providing mechanical and electrical connections between a microprocessor and a printed circuit board (PCB). This allows for placing and replacing the central processing unit (CPU) without soldering.

PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD CPU or Central Processing Unit - processes the instructions from programs, the operating system and other computer components;

PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD MEMORY SLOT OR MEMORY SOCKET - A memory slot is a physical connector on a computer's motherboard where you can insert memory modules. It allows you to expand the memory capacity of your system, enabling it to handle more data and run applications more efficiently. It is also known as a random-access memory (RAM) slot or dual in-line memory module (DIMM) slot.

PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD PRIMARY MEMORY OR RAM - RAM is your computer or laptop's short-term memory. It's where the data is stored that your computer processor needs to run your applications and open your files. Table 1. Versions of RAM

PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD CMOS BATTERY - Nonvolatile BIOS memory refers to a small memory on PC motherboards that is used to store BIOS settings. It was traditionally called CMOS RAM because it used a volatile, low-power complementary metal- oxide-semiconductor (CMOS). This cell battery has an estimated life of three years when power supply unit (PSU) is unplugged.

PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD PCI SLOTS - A PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) slot is a built-in slot on a device that allows for the attachment of various hardware components such as network cards, modems, sound cards, disk controllers and other peripherals.

PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD 7. AGP SLOT - The AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) slot provided the video card a dedicated bus and a direct path to the processor, giving it a lot more bandwidth compared to the PCI. The AGP slot also allowed video cards to directly access a portion of your system memory to read textures. These advantages allowed AGP video cards to perform a lot faster compared to their PCI counterparts.

PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD 8. ISA - Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) is a computer bus specification used for 8-bit IBM-compatible systems. The ISA is longer (by about two inches) than PCI, however PCI has double (or in rare instances, quadruple) the bit-width, resulting in faster data transfer.

PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD 9. Power Connectors - supply power to different components on the board 9.1. 24-pin (20+4 pin) Power Connector - This connector provides power to the basic functions of the motherboard, such as the CPU, RAM, and other integrated components.

PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD 9.2. 4-pin/8-pin CPU Power Connector (EPS) - The 4-pin or 8-pin CPU power connector is dedicated to providing power to the central processing unit (CPU). Modern CPUs with higher power requirements often use an 8-pin connector.

PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD 9.3. 6-pin/8-pin PCIe Power Connector - Supplies additional power to graphics cards.

PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD 9.4. SATA Power Connector - Provides power to SATA-connected devices.

PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD 9.5. 4-pin/3-pin Fan Headers - Supplies power to cooling fans.

PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD 10. Southbridge - The Southbridge is responsible for handling the I/O (Input/Output) functions of the motherboard. It manages the communication between the CPU and the slower, peripheral devices such as network interfaces, audio controllers, and legacy I/O devices.

PARTS OF THE MOTHERBOARD 11. Northbridge - The Northbridge is responsible for handling high-speed communication between the CPU, and memory (RAM), ROM BIOS, Storage and the graphics card (if a discrete graphics card is present). It manages the data flow between the CPU and RAM, facilitating the exchange of instructions and data between the central processing unit and system memory.
